I am researching combination machines to give me an update. I need
both functions, but really need to upgrade my hoop size from the 4x4 I
use now. Have heard the Singer CE-100 FS Futura is good with amazing
software capabilities, but it so hard to know which one is the best for
both functions. Cant afford to really spend a ton, thanks for your
help!

If you already have a good sewing machine and limited funds, I would
suggest looking at the Janome MC300E for embroidery. It has a standard
5"X7" hoop, and, with optional software, it can use the Janome
Gigahoop.

You do not have to connect the 300E to a computer in order to get
designs to it, and it has some built-in designs and editing
capabilities. It uses a CompactFlash card with an ATA adapter to
transfer designs.

I've heard the new MC350E, which should soon be available, has better
editing capabilities, a colour screen, and will use a USB memory
device.

For a combination sewing/embroidery machine, check out the Janome
MC9700. It uses the same size hoops as the 330E.

At the lower end of the price range, you are largely limited in the
size of hoop the machines will use, and some of them must be connected
to a computer to obtain designs. The higher up the price chain you go,
the more options are available.

The best buy in a combination machine is probably the Singer Quantum
XL6000. That, and Embird, and you can do just about anything, without
breaking the bank.

Seconded with a disclaimer: I bought mine (XL5000) for the
embroidery function ONLY, and because it has the "endless bobbin"
feature. I do not ever plan on using the "sewing" function, I
have three perfectly good Singer 401As. ;-)
