I use an adaptor all the time for my serial port dongle/box , without
problems (and know of many others who do as well), so this is not a
true statement.

If you cannot get an adaptor to work, your next step would be a
serial/parallel port on a card, provided that your desktop has an
appropriate slot open.

Some adaptors do not work bidirectionally, and those people always
have trouble with. Many other people have trouble because they fail
to install the adaptor correctly to begin with, and installed
incorrectly, the adaptor is completely useless (and very frustrating
to boot).

Place heavy emphasis on the "just about guaranteed". In some cases,
Windows XP ( don't even mention Vista ) doesn't seem to want to allow the
software to communicate properly with the parallel port, so neither the
dongle nor the embroidery card reader/writer will work properly, if at all.

Options in this case are to partition the hard drive and install an older
version of Windows along with XP, or buy software and hardware that will
work with XP.

Are you using Version 5 of the Husqvarna programs? I am just guessing
because VIP's dongle was a USB one (purple).
I saw your earlier post and you said you bought your D1 in 2000 when
Customizer 5 was still being sold. I got my D1 then and bought the
software a year later.

I am not sure, but I don't think it is a hardware problem. There is
nothing wrong with the ports you have bought (at a guess).
I could run it (Version 5) on Win98, but never tried it on XP, can't
imagine it would work on Vista when a Hasp4 fix had to be created to
deal with the problems of Hus4D on some computers.

I am supposing the "no dongle found" msg is the operating system
saying "haven't got a clue". Like it did for Hus3D (on some
computers). Later XP had included it's own Hasp files and wouldn't let
the Husqvarna ones override it until a "fix" was posted on Husqvarna's
site.
I think the Version 5 is just now to dated for the newer operating
systems to cope with. Like trying to run your favourite DOS program on
Vista - would that work anymore? Herb? 5 foot 2? Is it possible
without massive fiddling of settings?

I am only guessing, as I have had Version 5, VIP (free upgrade) and
now Hus3D (just free). I can't imagine that Husqvarna would have a
dongle fix for Version 5. I get laughed at (at the dealer's) because I
still use the VIP as my primary program. I liked it and know it inside
out. Hus3D dropped a couple of the features I really liked, so I do
what I can in VIP and use 3D when I have to.

Have you been over to alt.binaries.crafts.pictures and downloaded the
Hus3D program? It was posted a little while back, so I don't know if
it is still on your provider. You won't need a dongle at all.
Some operating systems need to run the Hasp fix that is posted on most
Husqvarna websites as a "no hasp found" message started coming up with
newer versions of XP for Hus3D.

I feel your pain as to the cost of just keeping up with Husqvarna. I
stuck with the VIP and only use the Organizer part of 3D for the most
part. I wouldn't have that if it wasn't posted on abcp. 3D is not much
use to me anyway as my D1 can't read the new colors in the color
palettes. I still have to stick to the default colors when writing to
disk. Otherwise they all turn mostly grey.

See if the 3D is still on your provider from abcp.
Otherwise you are going to have to go back to Win98 somehow.
I don't think the newer operating system recognises the dongle because
it is so "old". Hey, I like old - it's comforting!
Between Microsoft and Husqvarna changing their programs all the time,
I need to go back to knitting as my hobby or win the lottery :-(
