I am looking to buy an embroidery/ sewing machine. My mom has a small
brother machine that is embroidery only. I have helped her some and
worked on her machine so I do have some knowledge of using a machine.
Now I am looking to purchase a machine of my own. I plan to use it
for a VERY SMALL business of monogramming and appliqueing for others
and also sewing for my two children. Does anyone have
recommendations?
TIA!

Well, my husband said I can spend $3000, but I will also need to buy a
laptop to use with the machine. I am not sure if I need to get just
an embroidery machine or if I should look at combination machines.
Any sewing projects I do will most likely be very basic. My mom makes
a lot of my kid's clothes and she does heirloom sewing and I don't
think I am interested in doing that.

Personally, I have a Janome 9700 for which I paid $1800 (online, but the
seller was local, I was even able to pick it up and save the shipping!). It
makes sense to me that you would buy a Brother machine, as your mother has
one, and has the software, cards, drivers, and stuff, that will get designs
into it. If that isn't important then you can look farther.
Janome named machines (not those sold under Kenmore name) are all good
quality, so you can purchase for features, Brother has several lines of
machines carrying the brother name, some are good, some are ok, and some a
junk. You can look at http://sewing.patternreview.com/ for reviews of
machines.
Spend some time going to the stores that sell the machines and review what
they have. Remember that some sewing machine sales personnel give used car
salesman a good name! they are pushy, with the 'only while you're here"
deal. I never walked away from one of those deals that I regret. If the
sales person tries to baffle you with bulls*&&^%, and sell you a bunch of
stuff, walk away. One store tried to sell me a $1000 program because it was
"the only thing that works" well I got a different program for $85, and it
works just fine!
Good luck, with a little legwork you can get what you need and want for the
price you can afford.
