Hello! I am new to embroidery, but always wanted to stitch out designs for
my children and grandchildren.
So I purchased a couple of designs to use on my embroidery machine. The
problem is, I probably didn't know what I was doing. Along with my ignorance
I do have Bernina Artista Editor software, which is all I'll probably ever
need.
My initial project is to be a combination of designs; one of them is a star
appliqué design. Well I don't want to include the appliqué fabric. The
design has come in two files -- one is the outline to stitch and cut the
appliqué out, and the other is the file that has the tack and border satin
stitching to go around the appliqué.
My question is: Can I use the satin stitching design alone and just stitch
it out, or must I do an appliqué?
TIA for any advice you may have, as I am very lost on this one point.

In my opinion, it would look to me like you could just
stitch it out without adding the fabric. The way my
machine works is that it will do an outline for the placement of the fabric
but you don't have to put the
fabric on and you just go ahead and stitch the outline
border. I hope this helps.

It's usually a good idea to do a "test run" of your design on similar
fabric to your finished project. That will give you the best idea of
how the design stitches out and you won't have to worry about ruining
your project. I have made a good many "quilt blocks" this way. If
only I would sew them together :}.
