Hi all,
My husband is a programmer and he's writing me a piece of software
to keep inventory of all my fabrics. I sell baby items that I
embroider on ebay and I have an addiction to fabrics. So, I have
this HUGE collection of fabrics and needed a way to keep track of what
I have and how much I have. Then I got the idea to have him write
this software so I can sort by color of background and foreground
colors, sizes, amounts of fabrics. At this point these are the
options we have put into the software:

You can choose the colors for and as many as you want
for background or foreground colors.

You can choose a theme or items on the fabric such as dogs, fairies,
checks or whatever the pattern may be. And as many items are in the
fabric.

You can enter the information of the width and length of the fabric,
and the quanity of these pieces. This is for the quilters out there.
If you have already cut your fabric into quilting squares you can keep
track of your quilt squares and sizes.

You can scan your fabric into the program so you can view a picture of
your fabric.

You can sort your screen according to any of the information you have
entered.

You can enter notes on any fabric. So if you have a fabric saved for
a particular project you can enter this information. Or if the fabric
has a difficult sewing problem or a particular customer wants it in
the future you can put it some on hold for a period of time. Whatever
notes you choose.

You'll have a place to enter what bin or shelf you keep your fabrics.
I personally keep all my fabrics in numbered bins. They are see
through so I can see, but when you fold them all and put them in there
sometimes it's difficult to find them. I can now just go to the
bin number and know the fabric I'm looking for and know it's there!

I don't have any screen shots of this product yet because it's all in
the works but should be ready very soon. Do any of you have any other
ideas that could be added to this software?

The next feature will be a thread list. We hope to be able to keep
track of threads in the same program. I'm so excited about this! I
can't wait to be able to see all my fabrics and scroll through the
list and choose a project by color, theme, design or pattern! And see
it all right there on the screen before I go digging in my bins! I
know if I have the fabric before I go shopping for more or promise
something to someone when I don't have it! That is a bummer!

Thanks for any input!

Braves Fan!

I sincerely hope you are not a spammer, trying to peddle your wares on a
site that is for discussion of machine-embroidery only.
Emily-who is not a Braves fan either.

'Braves Fan' already posted this question on RCTQ and got absolutely no
response. There are programs already on the market doing what she's talking
about and a few that are really very good (or so the ratings say), not only
keeping details of your stash inventory but threads, trims, notions,
patterns, etc.

Now this is just my **VERY** personal opinion mind you, but.......I wouldn't
waste my time or money on this type of program. It smacks of the miser
spending all his time acquiring and counting and making detailed notes in
his ledgers of the piled gold coins and never doing anything to derive
pleasure from what they could be doing for him and others, other than
accruing. I have two full walls, floor to ceiling with shelves of stash, and
"stuff". It's either visible or labeled or "in that general area over
there". I pretty much know where things are and on occasion I'm delightfully
surprised by a "find" (the few times I've actually gotten that 4-year-old
Christmas morning rush (that wasn't just hormonal) in the past 50+ years).
To keep this program up to date so that it actually "worked" as effectively
as intended you'd have to go in and update the darned thing every time you
used and hunk, snip or scrap; or used up anything or added anything. Can you
imagine what you'd be in for when coming home from the "I only need two
spools of this variegated pink rayon" and you've lugged home two large bags
of 'Such O' Deal' you just couldn't possibly pass up? You'd spend more time
being a data entry droid than creating wonderful things....JMVHO, of course.
Besides, I wouldn't trust anyone who had a sewing area that didn't have a
bit of uncategorized, jumbled chaos *somewhere*......."Dr. Bennell says to
check the cellar for huge seed pods!"....do do DO do, dodo DO doooooo......

I'm guessing the "Braves" are some sort sporty team thang. Do they lumber
around with the pointy end ball, gallop back and forth on wood floors with
squeaky shoes or just whack at a round ball with a stick? Or, am I entirely
mistaken and "Braves" is the brand name *NAYY* of some ground breaking,
scathingly brilliant, machine embroidery type software or product?

Have you looked at existing software, such as:
http://www.lns-software.com/quilters/inventories.html

Programs like Electric Quilt allow you to include images of your stash.
