You can get seeds for them at Select Seeds - they specialize in
heirloom varieties. I started several varieties from seed the last
couple of years, and have had a fair amount of success.

Yes, I'm sure I can get seeds (and will have a look for them, now you
mention it). It's just that no one seems to grow them in our area
lately. Another one I haven't seen in ages is marigolds. And zinnias.
And asters. Hmmmm... Fran, I think I can feel a retro-fest coming on! ;-D

All *very* common flowers in our area! In fact, my mom had *tons* of
aster seeds from her flowers! Too bad I can't send you some (or are
seeds allowable?). She'd love to get rid of them.

Sadly, seeds aren't allowable. Y'know, I planted four (4) stocks last
season and, owing to the severe summer heat, they didn't fare very well
with only a few raggedy flowers. I just pulled them up when the plants
finally lolled over to one side. Since the winter rains set in with a
vengeance, I find the stocks must've self-seeded because I've got a
whole bedful of healthy luscious-looking plants, all on the point of
flowering. They're absolutely *not* supposed to be flowering at this
time, but hey! All sorts of weirdo garden things are happening over here
this year. Mum's magnolia has flowered prematurely while it still has
its leaves on! Wattle is blooming along the highways and it's only just
July!

Here in Oz, the trend is for people to plant drought-tolerant natives
and get rid of lawns to avoid having to water 'pretty' gardens when
summer water is short. Also, the current fashion is to use spiky,
leathery 'architectural' plants (whatever *that* means!) like cordyline
and dracaena. Flower gardens are getting less common as a result.

DS and I have just planted fourteen rose bushes in our carefully
prepared bed. We're going to have an *orgy* of roses this year! My
violets have finally flowered (I have twelve varieties) and DH has
promised to build me more beds along the other (ugly) fence so I can
plant out my ivy geraniums to cover it. A bleeding heart vine has crept
through from next-door's garden and is threatening to cover the other
(ugly) fence, so DH is going to build a trellis for it to climb on.

As soon as all this rain stops, that is...

Ditto on the congrats to Joan. Especially - a ribbon for the SAL - woo hoo.
