Jenn brilliantly suggested that the problem was that somehow a VCF file
was being attached, which would cause some newsreaders to interpret it
as a HTML posting (but not mine). Lo and behold, the box for Attach V
Card was checked on this computer (not on the other one)

Problem solved.
