Today's Washington Post has a piece about redesigning a home office
for Mom.
Yes, of course it included the color pink. Sigh.
But it got me thinking that my long planned for craft room needs to be
renamed the Mom Cave. Or can someone think of something better to
describe a room that will be dedicated to my needlework books, fabric,
fibers, and stitching accessories?
I can sit in our downstairs office which has the same orientation as
my daughter's bedroom two floors above me and plan. Desk. Work table.
Bookcase. Storage. Storage. Storage. Idea boards on the walls. Etc.
She's a graduate student now and if she gets a job next year any place
other than the Washington D.C. area, that room is mine.

For me, it's "The UFO Room" -- I probably started it over a year ago,
but haven't made much progress converting DD's old bedroom into a new
sewing room. (And changing the color *away* from pink.) I got as far as
sanding one of the closet doors, erasing some unfortunate teenage design
ideas that had to do with glow-in-the-dark stars made from some
substance I have yet to identify.
I've decided it's pedal to the metal on this project over Thanksgiving
weekend. We don't usually do any big family hoopla, and so I won't start
this year! Just some uninterrupted sanding/painting/carpet pulling time
for as long as my energy lasts. I won't get it finished, but at least
maybe a big step forward.
(And in our house, rooms are known by their former occupants. The guest
room is "The room formerly known as Chris's" - or RFKAC for short. My
new sewing room will be "the room formerly known as Lexa's" RFKAL).
There was an article in the paper about a year ago about people redoing
their houses when a child left for college - mostly to expand bedroom
space for the child left behind so they can live "en suite"!!! Huh??? Do
a makeover, take down walls, etc., for a child who'll be there for five
more years to give them *two* rooms to expand into? When that'll make a
great space for mom or dad, who'll be there a lot longer? I just don't
get it. (Like the househunting show we watched on TV last night, in
which the couple just couldn't consider moving into a house with only
three bathrooms for their family of four. Apparently, two kids can't
share an upstairs bathroom. Each needs his/her very own.)
