Ellice, Ericka, and I had an extra guest yesterday as Ellice husband
tagged along with us on our outing to the Woodlawn Show. What a
patient man. And he's good company, too!

I have been trying very hard to figure out why the show seemed
different to me this year. Maybe as I get older, I get more
discriminating. There was very little there that attracted me enough
to want to do it for myself. Not to say that there weren't some
beautiful pieces.

The prize winners definitely deserved their awards. And I was
impressed that that the people's choice award went to an absolutely
gorgeous stumpwork piece. This year very few honorable mentions as
compared to last year.

Was a lovely, warm day. During our lunch in the Tea Room we got to
watch Ellice spring into EMT action as a woman passed out. That was
impressive.

We stopped by In Stitches for some shopping where Ericka astounded me
by not buying a single thing! Great self-control.

Nearly bought the back end of an Escalade on the way home. Stupid
Beltway traffic came to a sudden halt. I'm thinking my CR-V deserves
an oil change and car wash after that great stop.

I agree. There were some very nice (and well-executed)
pieces, but not so many that suited my personal taste for what
I'd want to stitch myself or display in my home.

Nah, I just have a huge pile in my to-do list and
didn't see anything that looked like a lot of fun to stitch
*and* either suited my home or looked like a good gift for
someone else. I've been very un-restrained in the last
several months, so I've already pounced on most of the new
stuff that really spoke to me ;-)

...and we're all very grateful for it and the alert
driver! ;-)

Best wishes,
Ericka

What astounded me was that the gown did not receive a prize. I am not aware
enough of historic fashions to know what era the gown was representing but
it struck me as something I would wear if I wanted to go to a costume party
dressed like a wealthy person from the time right around the French
Revoulution. I assume the people's choice award went to that lilac colored
stumpwork piece which was hanging on your left just before you went into the
tea room. That award had not been given when I was there but everyone who
saw that piece was very impressed. I do not know if the Woodlawn people are
just choosing fewer pieces to display or if fewer are being submitted but
the show does seem to be getting smaller. This may just be part of the
cycle of needlework popularity but as long as they continue to have the show
I will try and get to it since there is always at least one or two items
which really impress me and make the 2 hour drive worth while.
As for the stop at In Stitches; I came away with one of the M Designs trees
'Christmas' but I passed on the buton pack since I want to do it as an
ornament. I also got some Gum Nuts silks and found a Silver Lining iris in
the bargain bin.so I did not do too badly.
I am sorry your trip got postponed a week so we could not meet but I am glad
you had a good time.

It may have something to do with entry fees going up
over the last few years.

Best wishes,
Ericka

He had a pretty good time, too. As you guys are good company, and well, I
think it was a relaxing non-brain day for him as he's been truly swamped at
work. Oh - his reason - we woke up to a flat tire on the little TT, and the
donut was kind of flat as well, and so with car things and all he just
decided to blow off work and have fun with us. He was worried that he
ruined a "gals' day out" but I told him not to worry - we can gossip as we
see fit.

Very true. DH & I were talking about it, as I was the next day with my
friend who owns the LNS and her helper. I think also there was little to
distinguish the pieces which won the 2nd, 3rd and HM from pieces they were
grouped with that won nothing. Or from each other - and probably with some
of the 1sts as well. The big winners - definitely exceptional work, and
that stumpwork box, and the stumpwork dragonfly piece were stunning. The
grand prize sampler - I think is a Darlene O'Steen piece - done with an
amzingly neatly planned stitching path (read this amazing back). It seemed
a lot of pieces were of a similar level of difficulty, and being very well
done - regardless of awards or not. At the same time, there was a lot of
just, well, XS pictures - and while I know those appeal to many of us - they
just didn't seem exceptional beyond the thinking of what a pain reading the
chart, etc - and there were a lot of just there pieces. Several pieces that
must have been class pieces - as there were multiple entries of the same
thing - canvas work, XS, etc.

But, it's always nice to go, and see things - how they look, how they're
finished, etc. Some amazing Mongolian embroidery - so fine and bright .
Great to see.

Thanks. I was glad to be there. Nice lady - who ended up all right
eventually. The "impressive" part - me with a large, hard shelled,
pneumatic (has air bladders between the shell and the inner foam lining)
walking boot having to get up. I was of course kneeling on the floor doing
the medic thing - and then after the ambulance got there could leave (the
EMS supervisor wanted my company - I think he came off an engine). After 20
minutes - I was pretty much stuck in place - and some nice guy had to lend
me a hand so I could get up without falling and crushing the old dear. I
only hope to look so good at 50 - this lady was 80! And very polite Ericka,
Donna & DH were all sitting, waiting with their food - not eating. So
sweet.

We were all pretty good - I just got a small companion piece for the
coffee-house - on sale. And a little chart that DH found - from Raise the
Roof "Dry Turkey" - it's a Turkey in a Martini glass - perfect for some
friends of ours.

Donna gets hurrah's for her fine chauffeuring. It was close - but she did a
great job of awareness and non-tail gating (very dangerous around here).
Traffic just stinks. It just stinks here.
