I'm trying to put together fibers for a new project on Congress Cloth -
rather
than buying more stuff for my stash, I am pulling older fibers
out of the drawer.

I found two that are the perfect colors, but I an not sure if I can use
them on
the Congress Cloth. The first is Rainbow Gallery Silk'N Wool,
52% silk/48%
wool, two ply twisted together. The card lists it for
"Needlepoint: 12-14
count" but I am wondering if I can untwist it and
use one ply on the 22-24 count
canvas I have? As is, it is about the
size of DMC #3 Perle Coton, unplied, it
seems to be about the size of
DMC #5 Perle Coton.

The second fiber is (I think) Needle Necessities Cluny, 70% wool/30%
rayon. It
seems to be twisted, but the ends are not unwinding or
fraying so I don't think
it can be un-done to make it finer. It seems
to be about the same thickness as
DMC #5 Perle Coton.

Does anyone here have any experience with using this fibers on Congress
clot -
or at all?

Thanks!

Why not take a small piece of the fabric and a bit of the floss and
just give it a try?

I've only got a limited amount of Congress cloth and don't have any for
doing
samples. Usually that would be the best choice, of course!

I broke down and have submitted an order for the fibers that the
project called
for I did not have. Half the reason for the project is
to learn new fibers so I
might as well get the correct ones.

Some day I have to start a Fiber Notebook with samples of the fibers
stitched on
various kinds of grounds, but when I started one years ago,
by the time I
stitched some of the threads, they had been discontinued.
At the very least I
need to make notes of what count canvas they should
be used on so years later
when they are no longer in anyone's
references I will know how to use them.

Thanks!

I never got a chance to answer when you wrote the first note, but I can say
that I've used some really odd things. I even used a bit of cord that was
couched on a project as a clothesline in a picture. I know I've used a
single strand of Persian needlepoint yarn several times and that works
nicely.
