I also got turned off the last few years with Cornwell's books. I will
have to get the new one from the library when we get home this fall.

I just finished a light mystery,Fatally Flaky, with great recipes in it.
It is part of the "Goldy" series by Diane Mott Davidson. Light, easy
bedtime reading!

Have any of you read the "Kate Shugak" books by Dana Stabenow? My
librarian recommended the latest one, Whisper to the Blood, and I
enjoyed it. I have one or two of the older ones to take away with me
next month. This series is set in Alaska, and brings in a lot of Alaskan
history, ad the Aleut culture.

I've read a few of them back when I was in CA
and frequented the library. It's been awhile
but I think they were decent.

I read "Fatally Flaky" and "Scarpetta" and enjoyed both. The authors of
both have been through slump periods where their characters just got
kind of -- well, tired, for lack of a better word. And that appears to
finally be ending - both books were a return to form, I'm happy to say.

I stopped reading her. I spent so much time just wanting to slap Goldy and
her son even after the evil ex died. Is the new one more mystery and less
angst?

Isn't she great? I don't think I still have the older ones, but they are so
worth reading and the series just gets better and better. The Liam Campbell
books are good too.

Just picked up "Life List" (it's up stairs, but I think the author is Olivia
Gentile). It's about a bird watcher, who when she is given less than a year
to live, wants to go see every bird in the world. She's a odd character, and
right now it's background detail, but I am liking it. We so rarely get to
read about the oddball women who go off and do what they want in a
sympathetic light.

If any one is into bird watching or more actively, birding, you should find
a copy of "The Big Year". It is about a "race" to see all 600+ birds of the
US/North America. The personalities are fascinating.

I'm waiting for my DH to finish "Unholy Business"; it's about the "Jesus
Ossuary" forgery.

I've read quite a few "Kate Shugak" books and really enjoyed the Alaskan
setting, especially since it's one of the places my DH and I hope to
visit soon.

I have also mentioned on here before that I like the books by Nevada
Barr - her main character, Anna Pigeon, is a law enforcement ranger in
US National Parks all over the country. There is a lot of interesting
information on deserts, forests, Great Lakes, islands, etc. depending on
where the story takes place. Nevada Barr herself was a ranger so the
info. rings true.

The Goldy books are fun and lighthearted. And really, is the new book
"Scarpetta" any good? I had sworn off Patricia Cornwell because she got
off into the weeds on unbelievable personal stuff and forgot about
writing a good mystery.
