Yes, we were in the process of changing over to all Iams, so Jack
erped the last of the Beneful - with red coloring. Yuck. And as
pointed out, the stuff we just scooped and then let dry seem to be
cleaning better. (3:00 am is not when I am thrilled with cleaning -
just get the worst of it up!)

The hot water only I hadn't heard - I will try that.

I like that Spotbot - I've also heard and seen a few good things about
this Hoover (and it's about the same cost!):

Input welcome!

I knew about the Hoover but I only have two carpets and am in a condo
so the Bot was more convenient for me. What I really like about it is
that it involves no effort to remove from closet, fill one tank with
hot water, plug in making sure brush is over the usually smallish
mark, set to either Set In Stain, or Light Stain, push Start and then
let it go to it. It washes and scrubs, then rinses and removes
moisture, then beeps to say Look, Done, Gone. Simply empty
containers and put back in closet. Thank you Bot, good boy Bot lol

If you have a large carpet area, it might not be so handy for you.

My sister used to have 2 elderly schnauzers and always had great results
with oxyclean. Mix the powder in very hot water, then let it cool to just
warm before using it to keep from setting stains. It works on hairballs,
too. Just pick up the lump of hair with a tissue, blot away as much liquid
as possible then soak with the oxyclean and blot with clean rags until dry,
or use the oxyclean with a carpet cleaner.

I really hate walking to the bathroom at night & stepping on a wet hairball
in my bare feet. Yuck!!!

I have a Little Green Machine, and it works very well on all sorts of
spots on both floors and furniture. I often use it with just water
rather than the regular cleaning solution, and have even used it with
liquid SpicNSpan solution followed by plain water.

I have the Bissell LIttle Green Clean Machine. I bought it for cat
accidents, but found it's GREAT for cleaning items like
the bed comforter -- I do it right on the bed. Dries in a couple of
hours.
needlepoint throw pillows --
upholstered dining room chairs and bar stools --.
I even surface clean my scatter rugs and toilet seat cover - anything
which is not really dirty, but is a pain to cram into the washer and
dryer which can beat it to death.

I'd love a carpet steamer but am thinking about ditching the carpet
for those fake hardwood floors. Any comments on that?
