I don't understand your aversion to Google. What exactly do you see
that's wrong with it?
I've been using Google to read newsgroups for at least 3 years now. I
can't block certain posters, but I have learned to ignore them.
With Google I can see that your most prolific month for posting was
July 2003 with 348 posts. I can find the post in 2006 when Ellice
start communicating here again after moving.
Maybe I'm just a frugal descendant of my New England ancestors (sorry
- cannot begin to type the Y-word today!), but I like free!

Like Yahoo Groups, it's extremely awkward to use. You're one of the few
I've read that have said they don't mind it.
If you want to search, Google is an "archive" and that could be handy.

Yes, free is nice. But nothing in this world is free. You pay for it
one way or another. Frugal and free aren't necessarily synonymous. :~)
If it works for you, that's fine. But I wouldn't recommend it. I used
Google for newsgroups for a short period of time. And I've read enough
posters here who mention they find it difficult.

I'm with Donna: I've always read through Google and like it. I
ignore what I don't want to read, can easily search archives, don't
find it awkward at all. I also don't understand the aversion to Yahoo
groups - my only complaint is that they sometimes take a long time to
load.

I can read via google and do if I am away from home as I didn't
download Agent etc on the netbook, but apart from the archives, it's
such a roundabout way to read, to me anyway.
With Agent click and it's all there. I can organise the pages the way
I want, either by date of post, header, subject, I can filter spam, I
can filter posts or posters. It's slick and everything is there at a
glance.
I tried google briefly when my ISP stopped maintaining usenet, but
only briefly.
There is free with eternalspring, once was motzarella. I chose to go
with apn which is part of the Agent system.
No delay here to use yahoo groups.

I only use Google as a last resort or when I want to search the archives.
It's clunky, it's harder keep tabs on certain threads, and you have no way
of knowing what posts you've already ready read and what ones are new.
Plus, there's a horrible amount of unfiltered spam. It's especially
cumbersome to use Google when following high volume newsgroups
(rec.food.cooking for example). I've used Eternal September (Motzarella)
and freenews.netfront.net for quite some time now (other free servers before
those) and I've been overall quite happy. I switched to using the free
servers after Comcast got rid of their usenet service in my area (no extra
charge for usenet service option given at the time). I'm currently back to
using Qwest as my ISP, and they also do not offer usenet access in these
parts anymore. The only real drawback I've encountered with the non-Google
free servers is that sometimes the servers are slow or are down and most
don't provide binary group access, but I don't need to see binary files
anyway. But yeah, I really really dislike using Google for access unless I
have no other choice.
