I remember the project you are talking about, and
like yourself I also am not in the know if it still exists.
So I entered "blankets homeless" to see in search bar
on IE8 using Bing search and it gave a listing with 5
pages, not knowing your area I couldn't pick one for
you but it might help in your search to do the same.

I know with our animal shelter if you bring them to their thrift store,
which is attached to their adoption center, they take them happily but they
don't have anyone to pick them up. We were told to just leave the stuff at
the door if they were closed and every raggedy towel or blanket would be
made use of.

I told all the shelters I contacted I would drop off.
Have to go the sporting goods store tomorrow, will stop at the pet store
next door as they are associated with "Kitty Angels"
