I was five and was using a toy machine that I got for Christmas. The
crank only turned in one direction so my mother had to pierce my
fingernail and finger all the way in order to lift the needle. Of course
I still sew(professionally) and I think mom was more traumatized than I
was.
That was in the days when toy machines were made of metal and did not
have a finger guard in front of the needle.

I think this is really common - with both people who sew a lot, and those
who don't sew much and don't pay attention. I feel lucky that I haven't
done this - though I did get a big scratch on my face when a needle broke
while sewing and the loose part flew up. I was lucky not to have it hit my
eye. Usually I just stop as it's plunging into my fingernail - and just end
up with a bruise. So, now, if I'm doing something with a really close seam
- I use a stiletto to keep the fabric under the foot & guided - trying to
avoid the needle thru finger thing.

When I moved here and before I renovated the bathroom, I decided to
put a little shelf on the back of the vanity door to hold the hair
dryer etc. It hadn't registered with me that the horrible vanity
(which dated to early 70s) was some sort of composite and not wood.
When I attempted to drill a hole for the screw, drill slips and bit
goes through my hand.
I ripped the thing out of my hand on a reflex action and held my hand
under the cold water tap. As I did it, I decided a trip to the
emerge, since it was a puncture type wound, would just be lengthy so I
stayed home and poured a good stiff rum instead lol

I think I told the whole story about the PhD candidate boyfriend that was so
freaked out that he never thought about calling an ambulance and had to be
talked out of carrying me down the stairs (he lived on the 15th floor)
instead of the elevator. Worst part, I'm going into shock and the more
levelheaded roommate isn't home.... Took a female grad student to keep them
from carrying me to the car a half a mile away.
You're lucky it missed the bone.
