I had to learn the hard way. I had a piece of finished needlepoint at
my desk, doing some frame measuring, and, long story, I got some ink
from a gel pen on it. On the white part of course.
So, now gotta tear it out, try to get the ink off the canvas with mild
diluted shampoo, restitch or else change the design to work in some
dark shade.
It will NEVER come near the desk again.
Maybe someone here will learn from my stupidity.

Perhaps you have a good office supply shop near you? Many of them sell
'ink remover' in small desk-sized bottles. I have used this sort of
product several times when a pen leaked in my shirt pocket. Some of them
work VERY well! (Of course... others don't work at all!)

I tried the shampoo treatment - got it pretty light - will try the
white yarn again and see how bad it looks. Maybe I will even apply a
bit of that liquid whiteout first.

Be very careful with using white out. It can turn very yellow over time.

You're reminding me of why I said I'd never leave a bag with
needlework beside the sofa again. Because one day the coffee cup fell
over. That's right. All by itself. Had nothing to do with the klutz
drinking from it. Of course I have begun to leave bags there again.
And this is why I shouldn't.
Good luck on the ink removal.
And thanks for the reminder!
