You might want to add an extra layer of batting (or two) by using monofilament
on the top and your
background color in the bobbin. Do an "in the ditch" stitching (straight
stitch) around your
appliqué using a smaller than usual stitch length. Then trim all the excess
batting away. This is
the way I do it when I want to "punch up" an area of appliqué on a wall hanging
or pillow.
