At appears that there is an authentication dialogue box requirement in
order to reply to postings. i think this will cut down on all the spam
and was wondering when Google would figure this out. It is not
foolproof, but it should work better than nothing. Good on them.

I just noticed that in the last post I made (in another group, about
30 seconds ago) and couldn't remember if I'd seen it before and it was
some kind of irregular thing, or if it's new, I notice it's at the
bottom of this one too, so I guess it's new.
Maybe it will help, maybe not, there are many more ways to spam usenet
than google. It may have the negative consequence of reducing genuine
posting , the same volume of spam is much more noticeable on a less
busy group.
Cheers

I would guess that most spammers don't use google groups.

I've not analysed it or checked the figures, but others have told me
that blocking all posts from googlegroups has significantly reduced
the amount of spam they receive. It seems that google don't move fast
to block any one reported as spam, whereas newsgroups via ISPs do as
well has having to have an account with the ISP. So any news access
that isn't ISP related is much more vulnerable to spammers.
