Hi Everyone,

Been awhile since I posted but just got back from a tour of California. I
drove all the way down to San Diego, stopping to visit with some friends and
family along the way.

I've done a travelogue again. Didn't stop at every quilt shop, but managed
to hit quite a few along the way. Hope you enjoy the first instalment.

On September 5th I headed out of town on another driving holiday. After
picking mom up we headed south over the border into Washington state. A
brief first stop is usually at Joanne Fabrics, and then we headed down to
one of my favourite Washington shops: Aunt Mary's. We had a visit with
Carrol the owner before getting on the road again.

We flew through Seattle and stopped in Kalamas and toured a couple of
Antique Stores. Then over the Columbia River and through Portland; finding
the Speckled Hen Quilt Shop in Wilsonville.
http://www.speckledhenquilts.net/index.htm I first found this shop when she
was located in Aurora; as it happens the Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Shop
Sampler have her featured in their fall issue. We arrived just before the
shop closed and they kindly let us browse and make a few purchases. One of
which was the Quilt Shop Sampler that Karen autographed for me. She walked
me through some of the displays that were photographed and we had a lovely
chat. Her new location is just delightful. She has a great block of the
month by a Utah designer called Bees in my Bonnets Lori Holt. I have her
Apron Club that I picked up at Quilts, Quilts, Quilts, in Sandy Utah a few
years ago. It combines both appliqué and some embroidery.

We spent our first night in Salem, a warm 80F after going out for dinner at
the Olive Garden. The next morning we woke up to clouds and a bit cooler,
we headed down to Albany and checked out a couple of antique shops.

Our next stop was in Springfield where we had great tomato basil soup at "At
Ruthie B's." This antique shop also has a restaurant in amongst the
displays. You will go around a corner and find that there are people having
lunch, tea, a children's birthday party or some other celebration. They
have their autumn and Halloween decoration out and the shop is just lovely.

Then over the road and around the block we found Quilter's Junction, what
luck! http://www.quiltersjunction.com/home They had 25% off their books, I
got two of a Piece of Cake books. Their New Appliqué Sampler and Appliqué
Delights; I'm taking a class from Becky Goldsmith in late September and was
glad to find these treasures.

Next stop was Pandora's Box in Garden Grove; Sue the owner has opened the
Brothel Café in the other half of her shop. The interesting feature of the
café is that the tables are made from headboards and footboards of old beds.
An interesting place to have a meal with friends and family.

When we arrived in Ashland Quiltz was closed. http://www.ashlandquiltz.com/
It has moved into another shop, maybe another visit we'll have better luck.

Onto Yreka California driving though the Siskiyou Mountains on the way, what
a pretty sight to see. It was 91F when we stopped for the night.

The next morning we awoke to sunny skies and headed off to Shasta City and
Sew Unique. The last time I went to this shop was January 2006 and it had
snowed the night before. It was warmer today but with a cool edge being so
high in the mountains. This shop has some wonderful quilts on display for
upcoming classes.

They suggested stopping in Redding at Sew What. www.sewwhatquilts.com We
did and found that they were having a North State River Run Shop Hop. The
ladies were all dressed in black and white; they had hors d'oeurvre in the
classroom and a bartender pouring non-alcoholic sparkling cider. We got a
passport and a strip of fabric and were on our way to the next shop, just
down the road.

Sew Simple had a theme of a grandmother's garden and had several lovely
quilts in their classroom. http://sewsimplebernina.com/ I found a fun
alphabet fabric at their shop. Down the road to Red Bluff and In Stitches,
a lovely shop that we've been in before.

Over to highway 99 and into Chico where we found the Honey Run Quilt Shop;
the ladies at this shop are always very helpful. I found a vintage looking
cherry print to use as a backing on a work in progress.

In Paradise we found Debbie's Quilt Shop with a Mardi Gras theme.

Also in Paradise there is a second shop that opened about 2 years ago called
Morning Star Quilts. http://www.morningstarquilters.com/ They have a lovely
selection of fabrics and seem to be expanding their store.

Down the hill and over to Willows to find the Quilt Corral, they are just
off the I-5 and were a very busy shop. We got lovely 6" strips of fabric at
every shop; they gradate from light to dark in fall colours. Mom got a
strip along the way, so I'm sure to have some fun with these fabrics.

We were running late to get to my dad's cousin and tried to call but didn't
have any luck with the pay phone. We arrived a bit late for dinner, to my
great chagrin. But our 3 cousins were just finishing their meal, so we
joined them. It was fun to remember times gone by.

Joyce lives in Citrus Heights, Lillian in Auburn and Vernon and Norma live
in Folsom. The family farm was in Elk Grove just outside of Sacramento.

The next day we had lunch with Annabella the older sister and went by the
old farm on Rau Road [named after the family]. The old farmhouse and barn
still stand, but the orchard is gone and the farm has been sold into smaller
pieces. We took a picture of the road sign as a memory.

As we were about to get back on the highway; Joyce spotted a pink Quilt Show
sign. Off we went and saw the Elk Grove Quilt Guild show. They did a
lovely show and had several vendors to shop. They had about 200 quilts and
have about 200 members in their guild.

Joyce took us to a local Mexican Restaurant called La Placita where we had
Chili Rellendos and Enchiladas with wonderful Margaritas! Back to Joyce's
where we had a night cap and chatted outside until after dark.

I'm glad to hear you're getting back to it, Sandi -- but I'm very sorry
to hear that you're not feeling too well. I hope you'll get it under
control soon and begin to feel better.

Thanks Sandy,

Actually I'm doing a lot better, meds are improving and my hands are
allowing me to get back quilting again. Did a sit and stitch at the local
Fall Fair and did both some machine piecing and a bit of sashiko.

I got one of those cheater printed pieces to start out with.
