The Irish Chain thread reminded me of something I've been thinking
about off and on.
Classic color combinations
Blue and yellow
Blue and white or red and white
Black and brights
Red/black/white
Gold/Burgundy/Green
and those I connect to fabric lines like Kansas Troubles and Fig Tree.
I feel like I'm 'cheating' when I use one of these old favorites.
It's like I'm writing a song, using someone else's melody and I'm just
changing the words around a bit.
Do you have a favorite color combination?
joan
BTW, in working in a quilt store I have some to the conclusion (not
original or earth-shattering either) that people tend to quilt with
the colors that they wear. After all, it only makes sense. But it's
still funny to check out someone with a stack of fabric that is the
show/hide quoted text
same color as their outfit that day. :> One of the reasons that I
enjoy making store samples or getting fabric as a gift is that it
forces me out of my comfort zone. Not for long, mind you, but out
there just a little bit.

Beauty in the eye of the beholder aside, and classic aside, I've seen some
blue and yellow quilts that simply bombed out. There's an Irish Chain in my
future but I've been studying what 'I like' and don't with blue/yellow for
years. No conclusions. Just looking.
Purple and gold should be easy enough but I managed a combination that
simply sat and snarled at each other. Polly

Ha, I'm going to love this thread, as color is what attracted me to
quilting in the first place. There's a red/white quilt in my future
as well as a blue/yellow one. Everytime I've seen a red/white quilt
in an antique mall, it's like there's a magnet pulling me right over
to it! Donna

re the irish chain, i can see in my minds eye chains in shades of all greens
from light thru dark, and the rest done in a rainbow effect across the quilt
covering shades of the other colours in the garden.
sort of a watercolour effect i think. that is just my initial thots on the
colours tho.
i just love greens. they are so neutral in nature.
uh oh, just had another thot...maybe reverse that and make the chain in
shades of all colours except green and shade the greens across the
background like it would be in a garden.
back to the drawing board.
shrug,
j.

I have to concentrate really hard to avoid going to my favorite color
combinations all the time. You're right, Joan, I do tend to wear the
show/hide quoted text
colors I quilt with. <G> I think my all-time favorite quilt combo has
been blue/yellow, but I'm trying to get away from that so as to have
some variety. I love blues, purples, violets into pinks -- greens and
browns are difficult for me.
