My husband and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary on a
Hawaiian cruise. We fly from Philadelphia PA to San Diego CA on Monday, and
then depart on a 15 day cruise on Tuesday. We will have a rental car in
Kona and Hilo, Hawaii and Lahaina, Maui. I'd like to pick up a few
"souvenir" pieces of fabric while we're there. Any recommendations as far as
what, and where, to buy?

After the cruise, I'll probably have to think about making a new wardrobe
too, as nothing will fit!

If you get time in SD run out to Rosie's. I don't know anything about
Hawaii shops. There is some info on this page:
http://www.nvo.com/poakalani/door/
Nosing around there might get you in the mood!
Happy anniversary and have a great trip.

We just got back from that cruise. We liked it! I bought fabric and
Sew Special in Maui at the Queen Ka'ahummana Shopping Mall and in
Lahaina there is a store at this little mall near Cool Cats Diner.
There is a nice shop in Hilo that I have been to, right downtown, but
it wasn't open on Sun. - the day we were docked there. At Walmart I
bought an Hawaiian stencil to use to paint a Hawaiian symbol on a
block, and at Hilo Hatties I bought a Quilt calendar that I am really
enjoying. Have a great time!!

The Big Island:

In Hilo
Dragon Mama 622 Kamehameha Ave, Hilo 808-934-9081 not a quilt shop
per se, but Japanese fabrics and such are sold there.

Down by Volcano National Park (which you do not want to miss, the park I
mean)
Kilauea Kreations
P.O. Box 959 Volcano, HI
808 967 8090
http://kilaueakreations.com/

If you head down towards South Point
Kimura's Fabrics
Kainaliu Village off HIghway 11
808 322 3771
Tons of stuff, nice staff, lots of hawaiian quilt kits and even patterns
and kits for mumu's and aloha shirts

If you go way up North
Top Stitch
64-1067 Mamalahoa Highway
Kamuela,
808 885 4482

I think there's also a Top Stitch in Kona.

Maui

The Needlework Shop
505 Front Street, Lahaina
808 662 8554

Sew Special
Kaahumau Shopping Center
275 Kaahumanu Ave
http://www.sewspecialmaui.com

There is a TON of quilting in Oahu. So if you are bumming around that
island you may see something. There you can even get a free hawaiian
quilting class at the Bishop Museum or at the shopping mall across from
the International Market.

Also, there is a chain of fabric stores in Hawaii called Fabric Mart.
Like a Joann's you do have to be careful about what you buy, but I find
there fabrics nicer than anything at my local Joann's and how can you
resist batiks for $5 a yard? Grab a phone book and see if you will be
near one in your travels.

There are also two nice shops on Kaui so you might fanagle a trip to one
or both of those ;-) Also, the little museum on Kaui is great and once
or twice a week they offer Hawaiian quilting demos.
