My father had the same attitude - he used to come home from work
and spin in the evenings. He'd brought a loom and spinning wheel
over to New Zealand from the UK, and had a free wool supply. He
was an architect who designed public buildings, and one of his
was the local agricultural research lab. This contact gave him
all the wool from Experimental Sheep that he could use. My mother
used to knit what he'd spun.

The Experimental Sheep produced wool that would have made great
scouring pads. I still have a couple of their sweaters forty
years on.

The same lab invented milking machines for mice. I'm so glad my
parents weren't into home cheesemaking.
