I posted this in the hand applique thread, but it may have been lost
down there. Here it is again ...
Has anyone tried using Madeira Cotona 80wt thread for applique? Is
that a good thread for applique, or is it too weak? Some sites say
that it is for Heirloom sewing. It appears that it only comes in
light colors, but it is 100% cotton.

Well, Bev, just for you, I walked over to the thread bin, pulled off a few
inches of Madeira 80 wt and gave it a gentle jerk. It broke. You could try
it for appliqué since there's really no stress or strain on appliqué - but
it might be annoying to work with.
I use it for wing-needle stitching, pin tucking and lace insertion. It
certainly would be useless for piecing - my crib quilts live a rowdy life
and the seams need to be strong. Polly

Thanks, this is just the type of information that I needed. I think
that I'll stay away from it for applique.

My favorite thread for applique is 100 wt silk. It literally disappears
into the fabric.
It is the only thread I use for applique. Try it, I'm certain you will love
it too. You
can also get away with just a few colors since it just "sinks" into the
pieces that you are
stitching down.

Thanks for that suggestion. I did purchase a few spools at a LQS.
I've been a bit of a coward when it came to using it, because of
ironing temperature differences between silk & cotton.
