James chose Nigella's Chocolate Log, and for dinner on Wednesday
(because that's when I almost had time to cook something a little
special), he wanted pork chops in devilled sauce. With rice and vegetables.

with regards to special meals....you are SO right when you say those
are the things you remember. "My" meal was my grandmother's roast
beef with gravy, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, fresh cucumbers and
tomatoes, and gallons of tea (Lipton, I think). That was what I asked
for every year, and every year we were at her house near my birthday,
that's what I got.....still haven't figure out how to duplicate the
roast beef, and nobody but me likes cooked carrots....but yeah,
definitely a good memory.....can't remember presents or any parties,
but can remember the food...lol

Larisa, frazzled because a) the power went out sometime in the night,
making DH late for work and ruining my plans for sleeping in, b) took
kiddos out for breakfast since we had no power and they were a
complete embarrassment to me, and c) have to go get DD changed into
the outfit she chose for her pictures, but she's now changing her mind
for the 20th time...oh, and did I mention my mother was supposed to be
here today and I have to clean the house?? Just point me towards the
chocolate cake and nobody will get hurt

I remember things like that... And making rhubarb pies in the Rayburn
at Granny's, stirring scrambled eggs on the Ideal Boiler as my first
proper cooking at home, and one or two culinary fails... When we were
going to be out all day and need something hot fast when we got in, my
granny would do fish custard... Typical Victorian nursery food, a
savory set custard with white fish in it, gently and delicately cooked
to perfection in the bottom of the Rayburn while we were out all day.
We understood perfectly why she did this, that it was easy to eat when
you are six and tired and over excited after a day out, but we regarded
it as a pennance. It was the payment for having a good time! And it
wasn't nasty, just bland and boring. We all have fond memories of those
days out, but not a single one of us has ever atempted to reproduce it,
and the one time my mother suggested it, she almost had a riot on her
hands. Definitely a mutiny! ;P

In the Outside Fridge, on top of the yoghurt... Yup, up there on the left!
