Some newsreaders, most notoriuously several versions of OE, will strip
out anything preceding a colon in post titles.
This is done as a very sloppy way of avoiding posts that start re:re:
re:re:re:(ad infinitum)
So when you use a colon when marking a post OT, when a person who is
using a reader that does that responds, it strips the OT off, and as a
result of that it starts a parallel thread.
It is why I do not use a colon when I mark a post OT.

Thanks for the info NM! I will be sure to leave the colon in the future.

The original message was marked OT, but that sometimes disappears when
people reply.

It doesn't. That's why the original post was marked OT, as is common
practice in newsgroups. Very common. Universal.
We're friends here. We talk about all kinds of stuff.
If you want to see some very (hilariously) OT posts, go over to
alt.fitness.weights. Lots of good stuff about weight-lifting. And lots of
insane stuff ranging from cosmology to cosmetology. Warning: profanity --
lots of it. Part of a great Usenet tradition.

Sorry, that should be "misc.fitness.weights."
