It doesn't, which is why she labeled OT (off topic).

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I bought a second litter box and
put it on the "poop" spot. left it there for 2 week vacation. When i came
home---everyday i would move the box about a foot. It took a long time but
finially got the box where it belonged. Patience is a plus.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago with Katie who had
chosen a corner of the bathroom carpet or the bathtub mat...the vet
couldn't find anything physically wrong with her and suggested a low
residue diet food for her (she didn't care for it too much, either the
kibble or the canned) - eventually, I realized that the problem
persisted more often after a certain brand and flavour of canned food
had been put out (all of them loved their chicken gumbo) plus the fact
that the oldest cat was also 'terrorizing' her whenever she had made
her way to the litter boxes. Katie also loves toast crumbs and will
wait anxiously for any that I might leave on my plate - the vet warned
against this....occasionally, Katie has done the 'bad' thing again but
it has been associated more with her stealing food from the
others....she no longer gets the low residue foods - she just would
not eat it. All my cats now eat Whiskas or Friskies brands of canned
food and either Iams or Whiskas dried - the accidents have been almost
nonexistent during the past year.
I believe that the problem was caused by an allergy to some ingredient
in the once-favourite food - possibly wheat related?? no toast crumbs
either. Things are much improved around here with the exception of
the bad language from Jessie which is directed towards Katie whenever
she is displeased about something - even at her old age , Jessie can
still chase down any of the other cats and demand her rightful place
in the hierarchy. Katie is the quiet timid one who will search me out
for a shoulder cuddle - if Sammie is 'in trouble' again, Katie is the
one who will take off and hide until things are quiet again.
Its also possible that Cassie is jealous of the friendship that
developed between the other cats while she was away and is acting out
against the weakest link?
Hope that you find a solution that works for all of you, jennellh

Mary,
So sorry to hear about your cat problems. I'd be willing to bet Ivy
Jane's toilet problems are due to the stress of dealing with Cassie. I
can't count the number of times I've read in the professional pet
columns that if a cat feels terrorized when she is trying to do her
business, she'll soon be doing it elsewhere.
Unfortunately, I have no good advice. :-(
Best regards,
Michelle in Nevada
