Like life, way high and way low.
Last Friday I flew from Bellevue NE to Paducah KY to visit with my Mom
on the occasion of her 86th birthday (10/9). I stayed in the guest
room of her senior apartment building and had my usual great time. We
did some shopping for her, visiting the Quilt Museum and ate at
Backyard Barbecue twice! We went to Hancocks so Mom could pay for part
of my purchase as my belated birthday gift. We had lunch at the Red
Lobster. We watch football on tv at night. We dressed the 13 sock
monkey dolls (that she'd made) in their pinafores and vests and pants.
I gave her the quilt I'd made for her birthday. I left Sunday morning
to fly and my last memory of Mom is her standing outside her apartment,
waving as I drove away.
On Monday morning, Mom wasn't feeling well and had a doctor's
appointment at 8:30 am. She collapsed in the waiting room with a heart
attack. Heroic efforts notwithstanding, she died last night at 5 pm.
My brother, who was with her, is a cardiologist, and I'm sure that made
this doubly difficult for him.
Meanwhile, we are in the process of moving from old house to new house.
The movers came on Wednesday. So I unpack and cry; cry and unpack.
It seems that everywhere I look, I see a trace of my Mother. I can't
believe she's gone. She'd finished the last of her Christmas gifts,
always being done ahead of time. Christmas in our new house won't be
the same without Mom.
I think I'll cry some more.

Joan I am so sorry to hear your sad news.
But I hope in time you will come to doubly treasure those
last few days when you and your mother were together and so
busy and happy.
Cry all you need to, then smile for the good times.

Joan I am so sorry to hear of your mother's unexpected death. I'm very glad
that you got to have such a wonderful visit with her though. Cry it out and
take one day, heck, one minute at a time. And remember that we're here for
you to vent to, reminisce with or just plain listen.

Oh, Joan! }}}} I'm so sorry for your loss. How fortunate that
you were able to visit her so recently, though, and to have had such a
wonderful time to remember her by.
