I found him and he's a freakin' Houdini cat! I just KNEW that as
soon as I posted, I would find the little stinker!!!!!
So -- I was talking to one of my friends here who has seen my sewing
room and she was convinced that he had managed to get stuck behind
something in there. There are boxes and bags of needlework and sewing
stash along all the walls and stuffed into every nook & cranny so there
are a ton of places for a kitten to investigate and get stuck in.
Now, DH and I checked out the sewing room several times and he even
looked behind the furniture with a flash light! I went in to search
everywhere again and started on the wall with the doorway and book
shelves from top to bottom. Below the bookshelves, all open space is
filled with stash. I moved everything and there was no Cheeto. The
next wall has the window and under the window (pushed as close to the
window as possible but not touching the molding) is a low chest of
drawers. It is not quite to my waist and the sides and front are solid
to the floor but the back has about a 4" gap. My sewing table is right
in front of the chest and close enough that I can't open the drawers.
My little cordless hands free phone sits on that dresser and I
noticed that it was not on. I get down on my hands & knees (never a fun
thing to do with my arthritis in the knees) crawl under the sewing table
to get to the plugs, etc. I'm right next to the little chest of drawers
and suddenly I hear a scritching sort of noise from UNDER the chest and
suddenly Cheeto's little head pops out like some sort of demented
Jack-in-the-Box and he gives me a HUGE yawn!!! He jumps over everything
and has a nice stretch in the middle of the sewing room floor and off he
goes!!!!! He had to have slithered his way behind the chest (there's
about 3" of space at the most and then squirreled his way under the back
of the chest and fallen asleep there. DH looked but only behind the
chest, not under it!
The little brat cat acted like he was afraid of me and ran off and
hid under the slipper bench in my bedroom. I went downstairs and he
zipped right past me and went out to the screen room. Then I told him
he had food, showed him the bowl and he came running and let me love on
him. So he's reappeared -- LOL -- and I'm quite relieved. I knew he
was here somewhere but was afraid he might have gotten hurt or
something. VBS, I'm afraid this is likely not the last time he finds
somewhere to sneak into. Hopefully, next time it won't be at food time
and I won't get scared and afraid he's managed to hurt himself.

I guess most of us kitties parents have been in that situation at some
time!
With me it was my first cat - no windows open, except one high one open
a few inches. Yes, I told myself, she *could have got. All round the
neighbourhood I went asking everyone ....
Thus, when we did find her I had to go back round again and tell them
all that she was found. She was sleeping under the duvet just in front

I knew you would! BTDT. They do scare us, don't they.

Our 'little ones' know instinctively if its vet or cattery time. We lost
Mia for an hour last time it was cattery time. We have looked
everywhere, including under the coffee table (in the shadows) and under
the recliner next to it, even tipping the chair up. No Mia. Then the
phone on the coffee table rang, and she shot out from under it. She must
have gone from one hiding place to the other - but how did she know
which one we were going to look under. As she is black and white we
would definitely have seen her if she'd changed rooms.

The last time Kiwi went to the vet I hadn't spoken about it, telephoned
or fetched his basket out, just decided - so why did he hide. He never
hides and never ever goes in the coffee table corner, but there he was
huddled at the back. Unfortunately for him he hasn't got Mia's brains so
just sat there thinking that because he's black he was invisible! Silly
boy - the vet was going to make him better (sprained wrist).

Typical cat! They can be so sneaky. But I knew you knew that, when I saw
that one of the first places you checked was in the bedsprings. I never met
a cat that didn't love to get into the bedsprings.

Once I was apartment- and cat-sitting for some friends in New York at the
same time that their apartment was being brought up to code. It was nuts;
I'd come home in the evenings and find all the furniture piled in the middle
of the floor while the wall outlets were being replaced. Anywho, one
morning I woke up to hear one of the cats screaming. I discovered her
behind the stove, which had been pulled away from the wall by the workers.
I had to perform some amazing contortions to get that (very obese) cat out
of there. Then, what does she do but jump up to a dresser and then up to
the top of a wardrobe.

She could have got out from behind that stove easily; she just wanted to
freak me out.

My ex's cat was missing in the house for over a week while he was gone and
had someone else coming to feed it. They were so worried. Even after he
came home, he didn't see the cat for two more days. Finally, the cat came
out from BEHIND some books about halfway up the bookshelf! I had a cat once
who found (or made) a slit in the box spring coverings and would get up
inside the box springs to sleep. I did a lot of frantic searching before I
found him!
