Friends,
My DH and I are driving from Fort Worth to Isle of the Palms, SC next week
with stops at Vicksburg and Atlanta along the way. DH has the Atlanta visit
totally planned with the Aquarium, Coke museum, Braves game and the Olympic
park. We are planning to stay at a B&B in Vicksburg and have narrowed it
down to two. Is there a particular restaurant that we should not miss? We
also love to eat the regional fare....what is Vicksburg known for? I know
that we will "do" the battlefield but what else should we see and do in
Vicksburg?
Also....what are the favorite things to see and do in Charleston? I intend
to spend at least two days at the beach and I know that we will tour Fort
Sumter and I am a real sucker for those walking ghost tours.
When he maps out our return trip, I will be posting requests for information
about that, too.

In 1915 in Vicksburg, DH's mama learned to drive. The next day, she drove
to Jackson. That was probably the easy part, assuming that her car wouldn't
have had an automatic transmission and Vicksburg is either straight up and
straight down. On muddy days, she said she had to get a flying start just
to get to the top of the hills.
Suggest that your DH check your handbrake before you leave Texas. You
will need it.
Plan some time in Vicksburg to just drive around and say ' gol-ol-oll -
ly'. There are flags in Vicksburg that were never surrendered at the end of
the Civil War. Don't plan to either.
You can go to www.Vicksburgcvb.org and learn a lot. Mostly, when we're
there, we just look. Polly

While in Charleston Fort Moultrie is also a "must see" and there is a 15
minute history film about it. Seminole Chief Osceola is buried on the
grounds. You can see Ft Sumter across the water. The fish & seafood
restaurants are GREAT. When you go out to Ft. Sumter the guide will point
out a few things. As you drive into SC be sure to stop at the Welcome
Center just as you go over the SC state line. Even a B & B should have a
few pamphlets on things to see. I love touring Charleston and you can go
tour one of the Plantations.

Forgot to say that Ft Moultrie was in the War with our cousins across the
pond.. There were some major battles fought in SC.

Judy, I grew up in Charleston and am jealous of your trip... Say Hi to all
my friends back home when you're there, okay???
That said, in Charleston, there is TONS to do... Patriots Point, make sure
you go to some of the plantations, walk the Battery - there are some great
houses and churches there to visit and Cabbage Row and Rainbow Row, go to
the Market, maybe take a carriage ride, see the forts, tour The Citadel (if
you ever get to go during the school year, plan to go to the Citadel on a
Friday afternoon for Parade)
IoP has awesome restaurants with seafood galore. Drive over the "new"
bridge.
See the lighthouses - one in Mt. Pleasant near (on?) Ft. Moultrie and my
favorite is on the James Island/Folly Beach side - Morris Island
Lighthouse - you can't go in that one as the island is gone and it is
sitting alone in the waves. If you go that way, see if you can still get
into see Angel Oak
This should get you started....
