Waaay off topic, but if anyone knows, it's someone here. Our DVD-R unit
died (it was an LG--Boooo!). We're looking for a new one, one that will
record and also dub VHS tapes to DVD.

Question #1:--Consumer Reports--is there different info if you pay to
access their online material vs. what's printed in the magazine?

Question #2:--Does anyone have a DVD-R unit that they like and which is
really dependable?

Thanks,
Monique in TX

My DVR died too.....the door won't open! It used to be sporadic...now it's
kaput.

I use our TiVO with the built in DVD. It's so great. Record a show and
then save it to DVD. Even I can do it! And it is -R.

I can only address the Consumer Reports question. For decades, we
subscribed to the magazine and took their recommendations and testing to
heart. They never let us down; not once. I would be sorely tempted to try
their additional online data. You'd have to weigh the costs of buying that
R thing you're talking about vs the cost of the online guidance. We
have a cheaper solution these days. My DB investigates his every purchase
just beyond imagination. All I have to do is call him and ask what
model/brand to buy. Polly

Check Consumer Reports magazine. If you don't subscribe, go to your
public library. They are very likely to have a subscription. I suspect
-- but have no way to prove -- that the online information is pretty
much the same as the printed.
