I am a B-a-a-a-d babysitter and was told so by Miss Lucy, my mama
cat. Motherhood finally kicked in after she lost all but one of her
brood. She has become very protective of this last kitten. I AM NOT
ALLOWED near it.

I let her out this morning for about an hour. While she was out
Little One started crying. It got so shrill I though the baby was
tangled up in something. I found it and was carrying it around with
me while I let Miss Lucy back in. She heard the baby's cries and
looked around frantically. I handed the baby to her. She promply
picked it up and headed into another bedroom for a new hiding place.
I followed and saw where she hid the baby. I came back into the
dining room and here come Miss Lucy. She looked mad. Came right up
to me and started meowing, switching her tail, and raised the hair on
her back.

OOPS. I was told in no uncertain terms to leave that baby alone.

I can be in the same house with the baby while mama is outside and
protect it from harm but I can't handle it, period.

Oh did I get told off.

Ooohh - Never forget who is in charge! Dogs have owners. Cats have
staff :-)

Sounds like you've been put in your place in no uncertain terms. Don't make
her have to tell you again.
So glad she's rallying around. Poor dear. Polly

I'm just so happy that they are both OK. I've been wondering about baby
kitten. Miss Lucy will probably soon get bored!! Then you'll be able to
have baby when you want! I did have to smile at your description of
Mama's protective performance.
