Here is a picture of the first coat of varnish on a newly inlayed
series of oak strips around the perimeter of my main sewing table. The
smaller strips of oak define the area occupied by the sewing machine.
It is held in place in that position by a bolt that passes through the
hole and screws into the bottom of the sewing machine. Three more
coats of varnish, with light sanding between coats, and a final wax
polish coat. I will post a picture of the finish product, with the
sewing machine in place, when it is finally done.
I tried to post this before, but it didn't show up. If it does, then I
apologize for the double posting.

Oh, that's pretty! If I had room, I'd ask commission you to make me
one, with some sort of ruler inlaid along one edge...

Sort of like this? http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2047932440100692635= bnQMco
This is my old cutting table, now doing duty in the basement
woodworking ship.

John,
Golly, I feel inadequate--you can do gorgeous woodwork and make quilts! The
table is great. Can't wait to see it with the machine on it.
Happy quilting,
Lenore

Wow. John, please could you send me just a tiny bit of your energy
and.... (can't think of a good word!) finish-it-iveness. Ok, that's a
terrible attempt at a word and it will never end up even in a Scrabble
game. (Maybe.....) But the sentiment is very real. You have my
complete respect and admiration. Dynamo should be your screen
name. :-)
