Yes, so many people tend to forget that there are "bad apples" in any large
organization--public or private. But for some reason, a lot of people, at
least around here, are too apt to say that I saw government employee doing
XXX, being lazy, etc. and tarring everyone with that brush.

Pet peeve of mine these days. SIGH.

Dh worked for Feds, county and state over his career. His final
work was for Ca. dot (caltrans) Yesterday we drove by some
guys working doing road construction. 4 guys leaning on shovels
just like in the jokes. I told dh they sure would get less harassment
if they would not do that. Someone should invent a non-leanable
shovel. DS the cop says that the lazy and donut jokes don't bother
him anymore. Anyone that thinks he is lazy is welcome to.
Dd works for a local municipality. She works not so much with the
public so is somewhat insulated until the whole building of employees
has to be escorted to their cars after a citizen gets angry and threatens
to take them all out. I hear nothing but complaints about retirement
public workers get. Like they don't pay anything into it. It goes on
and on. It really is just part of the job though I guess.

Yeah, I hear that a lot too. And how my salary is their "tax money"
Right now my share of the retirement comes straight of the paycheck, while
the State decides not to make its payment into the fund, again. And I'm
really, really tired of people forgetting that public employees pay taxes
too.

Gosh, govt. liquor stores are a pretty weird idea for a native
Californian. We make lots of money on taxing liquor and
it can't be too easy to for minors to buy liquor since they
still make 'beer runs' at the grocery (they have to steal it
and usually get caught) Also from what I hear there is no
shortage of youngsters hitting on their parents home liquor
stash. Less govt. involvement is change I would like
to see myself. Just my opinion though.

As always, we must agree to differ on some points, including this one!

I would rather see all liquor profits (not just taxes) going to taxpayers,
rather than to wealthy businessmen.

Of course you must also factor in that I worked for the government for 34
years and am now on pension, so I don't have the same negative opinion of
government agencies that some do. I have far more fear of corporations.
Corporations are "them." The government is "us" or at least it should be.
If it isn't "us" we need to kick the bums out, and I still have hopes that
we did that last year. I have hopes that hardworking people will be able to
get affordable healthcare. For my part, I have excellent healthcare, and I
am perfectly willing to be taxed on it, if it means my self-employed
relatives and others don't have to go without.

I worked with many efficient, dedicated people, and a few who weren't. Just
like in private industry (based on what friends tell me). And contrary to
what you might think, we usually managed to get rid of the ones who weren't
good employees. It can be done. I was, and am, proud to have been a public
employee.
