I have that problem with my 160, can only change the stitches. I
managed to save an old laptop with a parallel port and old OS.
Perhaps you could find a used laptop, mine is a Toshiba salvaged from
a business that was upgrading to new HPs.

NEL,
Yes...you can go to Radio SHack and get an adapter. I had the same issues
years ago when I got my Bernina and software and had my laptop. I am on my
second thingy...but they will know what you will need at Radio Shack.

Thank you for that, Janet, it sounds like a plan.
What is the thingy called and what is the UK equivalent of Radioshack?
WE have a place called Maplin, that I think would be about the same,
if I've got Radioshack pegged, but I would need to know what to ask
for.
Thanks.

Thanks for all the input on my problem. I've found two solutions,
neither satisfactory. On one of the listservs that KC directed me to,
one user gave me a way of kluging a design through Editor Plus which
would work if I were only doing the occasional one here and there, the
other answer is that I needed the next level up which was Designer
Plus to do what I wanted, but those are now all sold out as the new
version 6 is out. A dollar short and a day late as my uncle would have
said. The store I purchased it at tried to find me another copy of
Designer but was unable to locate any and is willing to take the
program back or credit me with it's purchase towards the new 6 whose
price is not negligible. I can't ask any more of them, they have been
very understanding and most places would not even consider taking a
software program back.
Thanks again for the input,
