cruises, too, but mainly for the chance to go see a new place. I've done
several cruises, and the shipboard activities are okay, but they're a bit

I tend to agree Sandy and I've only been on one 3-day cruise to the Bahamas.
Maybe that just wasn't enough time to see what a cruise is really really all
about, I don't know. My idea of a cruise is one where there is no one under
the age of 21, not that I don't appreciate children and young people
but....the cruise we went on, out-of-control kids ruined parts of it. We
couldn't get into the hottubs because they were always filled with kids. The
ship had an adults only section with two hottubs but one or the other was
always closed and the open one was full of adults. Kids running up and down
the hallways, playing on the elevators tying them up, pushing and shoving
their way around the food lines, and just generally being out of control. So
a quilt cruise would be wonderful for me I think. I prefer the ports of call
too as I love seeing new places.

Hugs,
Kim

Me too! I guess I've been on seven or eight, including one in the
Mediteranian, one to Alaska, one to the Panama Canal, and one to Hawaii. My
husband and I really enjoy the ship and it's activities, and visiting all
the ports. It's great to unpack, and know that you won't need to pack
again, read a map, find a restaurant, etc. etc. At sea, we "do our own
thing". Sometimes I read, or take a class. My husband will go play bridge,
or check out the sports activities. We both walk several miles a
day.....just to try to compensate for the delicious meals! We've met some
wonderful people on these cruises, and still keep in touch with many of
them. We met one couple on our honeymoon cruise (37 years ago), and still
exchange Xmas cards each year, even though we've never seen each other
since!! I don't know if I could quilt on a cruise...the outdoors is so
enticing....sea breezes, scenery, etc. Just too much other stuff going on.

My husband and I are planning the "trip of a lifetime" (for us, anyway). In
January, we will fly to New Zealand to take an 18 day cruise & tour of NZ
and Australia. We spend 12 days on the ship touring NZ, Tasmania, and then
into Sydney. From there, we take two short flights and some bus trips to
tour a little of Australia! We plan to add a couple extra days at each end
to do things on our own. (Maybe that will include a quilt shop, or two)
You see, I'm trying to keep this on topic!!

Getting excited already,

Oh Alice!!! I'm so jealous. That is just the cruise/trip I would love to
take. I have always wanted to go to Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania,
especially Australia. Ok now we're saving Marriott points for our own "trip
of a lifetime" lol. And to add quilt shops in will be the icing on the cake.
Oh to fondle fabric from "down under". I hope you and your hubby have the
time of your life on that trip and enjoy it immensely.

Hugs,
Kim

Worst part?!? I *loved* the days at sea on the (non-quilting) Alaska inland
passage cruise I went on with my sister 9 years ago. I brought along some
applique to work on, and we found one of our favorite authors in the
on-board library, and I found a quiet place to sit with an endless view of
the ocean -- it was a heavenly place to sit, and think, and stitch, and read
on our two days-at-sea. (One up, one back.) The ship also had a lot of free
activities going on. I think you would be hard-pressed to be bored!

I have never taken a "quilting cruise", but always take a tote bag
with quilting with me on board any ship! Sometimes I take wholecloth
blocks, which later become a part of a quilt made of wholecloth blocks
set off with sashing. Othertimes I take piecing. After breakfast and
a morning at the pool and then a light lunch, I get cleaned up, grab
my bag of stitching, and find a spot in a lounge by the windows, order
a soda pop, and stitch while bingo, a trivia quiz, or something else
is going on. I find that if you are reading a book people leave you
alone, but if you are stitching people tend to stop, ask what you're
working on, and stay to chat a bit. I adore days at sea!
