I usually use a cotton batting but have seen an advert for these at very
good prices from a UK supplier. Has anyone used them?

Hobbs Tuscany Silk Wadding 90% Silk 10% Polyester Resin-Bonded Ref:
TS45120

Tuscany Silk quilt wadding is made from a very fine, pure imported silk.
It is then carded and resin bonded to help retard bearding (fibre
migration) and allowing the batting to be handled like a blanket. It
can be quilted 4" apart and hand washed in tepid water and laid out to
dry flat. It will likely shrink approximately 5%. Silk being a natural
fibre breathes and quilts magnificently by hand or machine. Recommended

Hobbs Tuscany 100% Wool Wadding Resin-Bonded Ref: TW45120

Tuscany Wool wadding is made with the very best superwash wool which
eliminates most or all of the shrinkage. It is then carded and resin
bonded to help retard bearding. Tuscany wool batting provides superb
insulation and the fibre breathes allowing excess heat to dispense away
from the body. It can be quilted up to 4'' apart and is washable. We
recommend washing in tepid water by hand and laying out flat to dry. It
hand quilts like a dream and is wonderful for machine quilters as well.

I haven't tried these ones, but Matilda's Own in Australia
has wool/silk, wool/mohair and wool/alpaca batts out on the
market - all feel gorgeous. Silk blend has softest drape,
alpaca is just about the warmest batt I have ever seen,
mohair blend is very "springy and puffy" (quoting 6yo
critic!)
