Early christmas project

As you may know, my sweet FIL passed away recently. Today was the first day of the house cleaning with all the siblings. It was a sad day but a good bonding activity for my husband and his brothers and sisters (6 total) but he brought me back some items that just made my day. First was the fishing quilt I had made for my FIL several years ago for Christmas along with a matching pillowcase. Second was a flag door banner that I made for him right after 9-11. Then, he brought me out to the Jeep and showed me the best yet - all of my FILs shirts, stripes, plaids and solids. We normally do family gifts at Christmas and I had suggested that perhaps this year we could give each family a lap quilt made from his shirts. His siblings know about the plan for the quilts but they don't know that I will put some picture transfers of their dad on it as well. So guess who will be starting their holiday sewing soon?????

Alice -- what a wonderful project... and a wonderful way for your DH and his sibs to remember their DF.

I'm sure they will love their quilts -- and I'm sure that the photo's you select for each will trigger fond memories!

That's a dear and precious idea, Alice. Wish we were closer so we could come help. Polly

Your DH's sibs are going to love those lap quilts.

I plan to start holiday sewing soon as well. I picked up some lucious Christmas fabric at the clearance sales including gorgous velvet, in green and red, along with some great emblishments, which will used for personalized Christmas stockings for the two little neices. In addition I used my 50% Joann's coupon on the "Lazy Girl Designs" Towne Purse pattern with the plan to make several of those.

However, I just found out a co-worker is pregnant for the first time at 42 and she will leave us when the baby comes (don't blame her, I'd do the same!) ....so now a baby quilt has taken priority!

What pattern will you use for the baby quilt? I have one to make as well for a coworker who is due mid-June and can't quite decide what I want to make. We do know it's a girl which helps with color choice.

I used EQ6 to slightly modifiy the 'card tricks' block to make it easier for paper piecing (I hate dealing with triangles LOL). It looks like four little hearts intwined, using baby-ish prints in a soft pink, blue, green and yellow for each heart. Hope to pick up the fabrics this week - she isn't due until July so there should be plenty of time.

That's a wonderful plan, Alice -- and very generous of you to do for your DH's family. :) That's a lot of lap quilts to make, so it's a good thing you're starting early. ;) Best of luck!

I think I'm going to need it. Several of the family members have picked particular shirts for their quilts so I haven't even started yet and I already have constraints. But I think there are enough shirts to go around and I will add solids as well. I'm thinking of doing snowballs and nine patches.

Alice, why don't you simply cut the shirts into pieces of whatever sizes you're going to need and make sure that everyone gets some of each shirt in their quilt? Fewer constraints, fewer headaches. Just a suggestion.

Snowballs and nine patches are one of my all time favorite combinations! I even have a book that has several patterns for color combos/arrangements that make them look even more amazing.

me know if you'd like to see the book, if you don't already have it. I'd be happy to send you a copy.

I actually have that book, Debi, and only one copy! You'd be surprised how many dups I have of some books! Ok, I have a triplicate too, but only one!

I think this will work nicely for the quilts. I'll keep you posted!

That's exactly what I intend to do but one of my SILs picked out a particular shirt. I don't know if it was a gift from her little guy to his Grand Dad, but she has requested that one shirt be in her quilt and I will make sure it makes it in. I should have enough to go around to the others as well. I don't know what kind of yardage I can get from a large man's long sleeved shirt but once I cut into the first one, I'll have an idea of how much in total I will have to work with and I'll go from there.

Howdy!

Ad, self-promotion, whichever. Thanks for the chuckle. Linen, do you quilt, too?
