I accidentally bought a gorgeous variegated green Sulky cotton thread in a
12 weight- I usually buy 40 or 50 wt. I had to use a size 18 needle to
accommodate it, but the effect is really cool! The buttonhole stitch around
the applique looks as tho it is a very narrow braid applied to the edge.
You can compare it to the appearance of the cotton 50 wt. turquoise thread
on the flower- which is the same stitch. I'm buttonhole stitching the
appliques on my mom Chemo Cuddle Quilt.

Here's a photo of the quilt top (I was looking for pieced morning glories
and didn't find that pattern, so I designed my own appliqued morning
glories) plus two close-ups of the threads-

Now the Presencia thread- I was VERY disappointed in it. It comes with
some kind of plastic wrap around the spool that's very difficult to remove.
But when you get the plastic wrap removed there is an adhesive backed dot on
the end of the thread. When you finally get the dot peeled off there is a
round spot of adhesive residue left on the thread. I had a choice of
running the sticky adhesive thru my sewing machine- and the delicate tension
disks- or wasting half of the thread on the spool by unwinding the thread to
where there was no adhesive left on it.

And... while I was sewing with it my sm made some ugly noises so I stopped
to see what had happened. The darn thread had a knot in it! Yep, two ends
of thread were tied together- they must have run out of thread half-way thru
filling the spool so someone just tied the two ends together and then kept
right on filling the spool. Grrrrr! I am not happy about this! I would
NOT recommend Presencia thread!

I LOVE that 12 wt sulky. I use it to machine appliqué all the time. It's
also great for redwork and other types of embroidery.

I've not tried the Presencia on a spool, but I like their 6 ply embroidery
floss in the skeins. Has a silky feel to it.

Great quilt, Leslie. I don't get that edge effect with the Sulky. Mine
just looks like slightly heavy buttonhole. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Beautiful quilt, Leslie, great pattern design. Wonderful . . . and I'll see
if I can pick up a spool of 12 wt sulky. Sometimes I want a heavy sort of
primitive look with black thread on 30's repro. That ought to be a lot
easier than stacking two spools of thread. A whole lot. That size 18
needle is a killer though. I wonder if there's not one with a wider eye or
is the heft of the needle needed for the thread weight? Polly

Polly, I had needles in 9, 11, 12 and 14- metallica, quilting, embroidery,
topstitching, and microtex. NONE of those 14s could handle the 12 wt.
thread. No matter how slowly I went it shredded every inch or so. I was
getting very upset until I stumbled across that 18 needle. Heaven only
knows when I bought it- it is a Singer brand needle and I quit using them
and have used Schmetz exclusively for about 16-17 years. I'm sure glad I
had it, tho! A 16 *might* work... but I don't have any 16s so I'm glad the
18 is doing the job. I'm sewing thru two layers of tightly woven batiks
plus Heat & Bond Lite to fuse them together.... maybe that's part of the
reason the 18 is what worked for me? I still have to sew fairly slow with
the 18 or the thread will start shredding.

I think the 12 wt. in black would be super with those repro fabrics! Great
idea!

That's weird because I use a Schmetz 14 needle and it works just fine. What
can possibly be the difference?
