It seems I am going to have the opportunity to do some traveling- I've never
been outside the USA except for a short way across the border into Mexico.
And I've only flown about 5 times and never even had to catch a connecting
flight. I've never ridden in a taxi or public transportation. I need to
know what to do??? How do I find a curling iron that will work no matter
where I go? Can I take an aerosol can of hairspray? How do people pack
what they need without going over the weight limits? Is cotton clothing the
best or too wrinkly? How do you pack clothing so it doesn't look like you
slept in it???

Help!

Leslie- applied for my passport and now I'm lost! & The Furbabies in MO.

Deep breaths Leslie. You can do it! Can you reveal where you are going?
The easiest thing to do is go to a good hairdresser who can give you a cut
that needs no hairspray or curling iron! There are pump hairsprays, but
don't forget to keep it under 3oz. if you are going to carry it on.
I bet Bronnie can give you the best packing advice! I'll just tell you to
stay calm but enjoy the anticipation. People are really nice and will help
you with transportation.

I don't know yet where we are going. I can choose the destination and we'll
be meeting there, so I will be traveling alone. The first few times it will
be closer to me and English speaking- I *know* that for sure! LOL My
overly bleached long blonde hair absolutely *must* be dried and ironed- no
way around that, I'm afraid. No really good hairdressers that I've found in
my small, small town and I don't want to cut it off any way. Sheesh- I am
going to lose my mind with all the little details- and I have nooooo idea
what most of the little details are! I ordered a 'dummies' book for travel
info. I hope that will help me, but with airline regs changing so often,
who knows how up-to-date the book will be.

Howdy!

http://www.ricksteves.com/

We use backpacks, no checked luggage. Just about EVERYwhere has laundry
service (including do-your-own), and if you're moving around to different
locales, who cares if you wear the same clothes more than once every 3 days?
Your hair: get some nice accessories; hair bands are back in style, & there
are many lovely clips and ponytail holders; if you must, take along a small
roller brush (as others say, most hotels will provide a blow-dryer).
Hair spray: buy it there. EVERY country, esp. English-speaking ones <g>,
has a pharmacy/general store in town. Hey: other countries also carry
toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, foot powder, new/clean socks & hose,
face cream, hand cream, all those little things you stick in your handbag
that take up way too much room in the luggage. The Rick Steves site also
shows a tiny folded bag that turns into a great carry-along bag, substitutes
for a purse. I fill it up, head to the post office & empty it into a
shipping box, send all the stuff home, fold the bag & put it back into the
backpack (or my pocket) (we do this in U.S., too).
Get a money belt. Any purse or shoulder bag is too easy to snag and get
carried away or left behind. Keep your i.d., cash, credit cards in
the money belt. Do as Rick says, keep out just what you will immediately
need, use the money belt as your personal bank.
Banks: everybody's got 'em. And they know how to exchange currency.

Relax, have a good time. Enjoy the new & unusual, the way "they" do things.
Best advice I ever received: "Be a temporary local." (also from RickSteves)
Enjoy. Or stay home. ;-P

R/Sandy - the library carries Rick Steves' books; I bought a couple, read
all the way thru', then took along just the parts I needed, as he suggests

wow, are you gonna have a blast, Leslie.
seems everything has been covered.
just a note or two....

if you think you might use the ATMs overseas, be aware of
what the fees from your bank or credit card company will add
on. also check the fee for the exchange rate on currency
added by bank and cc comps.

a 'cash advance' on a credit card has a bigger annual % rate
on it than just charging the cost of something, as a rule.
as for debit cards, i dont know if that can be used outside
usa, pays to check.
you might be able to put money into your credit card acct in
advance and avoid extra fees if you do need to use it for a
cash advance anywhere overseas. then if you dont use it,
they send you a cheque for the remainder the following
month. check with them how it works, each card company is
probably different.
pays to read thru all the stuff online at the bank and
credit card companys. then call and double check so you've
got it from the horses mouth. i hate when they change policy
and the info doesnt reach the customer. hey, it happens,
argh.

check with your cellphone company if you can use your phone
overseas and the cost. it is called global wandering, iirc,
or something similar. easier than getting used to a new
phone, depends on the cost and how much you think you'll use
it of course.

eat the local dishes in restuarants if you can cope with
them. usually the best meals you'll get.
its been decades since i was in europe but for lunch we'd do
a local deli, grab bread, cheese, some local deli meats, a
piece of fruit and a bottle drink...eating outside in the
sunshine, just like a local might do. :)
and learning the basic please, thank you, your welcome in
the language will give you a better reception from the
locals too. we all appreciate anyone who trys, even with a
bad accent it'll give everyone a good laugh, always a good
thing, eh.

some bigger hotels have free online access for their guests.
i used the one in the Sheraton across the road from where i
stayed, just wandered in, sat in front of the lobby tv for a
while, then wandered over and used the computer. i used
google groups for rctq posts. the hotel didnt even check on
me. thot i was a guest. with so many guests you can often
get away with it. worked for me a few times. :)

i guess thats all i can think of right now. have funnnnnn,
take pix, have funnnnn, take more pix, have more
funnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
woooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
j.
< dont forget you can always 'wear home' whatever is outside
your luggage weight allowance :)) >
