Has anyone any experience (and wisdom/advice) with making a quilt
entirely out of velvet? I'm not talking about a crazy quilt (as I was
asking about a couple weeks ago) but the entire quilt using nothing
but non-stretch synthetic velvets (not crushed - not velveteen - just
the real nice/good stuff). Thanks.

I did one but the blocks were not pieced. It is done entirely in 10"
whole cloth squares and is more as "comforter" then a quilt. I used
high loft poly batting, did stitch in the ditch along the seam lines and
brought the backing around the edges to the front as the binding. It's
heavy -- very very heavy -- so it's a good thing I didn't use cotton or

Mine too, Mary. It was very, very heavy - and hot. Wasn't any way that
anybody was going to sleep beneath it. It was lovely but just 'for show'.
Only took about ten years to finally get the fuzzies from cutting and
stitching out of the cat's whiskers, the ac filters and Everywhere else.
Now. Yes. Doc. Why do you ask? ... not that we are much in the way of
encouragement. Polly

Always fancied making a velvet cape, have been collecting different
colours for years...let us know how you get on. Would like to have an
on point pieced centre at the back and the rest black....

I would have thought that was obvious - 8-) I'm working on one (or
three...)
It doesn't seem like it'll be THAT heavy - 7 yards of velvet (in as
many colors - we went shopping yesterday) only weighs a couple of
pounds. Warm is fine - many a time we sit on the couch with 2 or 3
blankets across our laps/legs. Haven't decided on fill yet (or if
we'll use any); that's why I'm asking questions of anyone who's done
this.
I forgot to mention in the original post, but can anyone suggest/
recommend suppliers/vendors? Can't tell much from websites - most
only seem to carry a color or two (unless you go off into crushed
velvets, velours, and the other stuff I'm NOT using). Most of what we
found locally is high color value (very dark colors) and I'd like to
break it up with some medium value colors; we had to put a couple of
pieces aside because they were so dark you couldn't differentiate hues
in the light in the room the quilt will live in (yup, I think about
things like that when in "design mode").
