To save time, you could use a piece of Heat'n'Bond (Lite) - lay the hearts
right-side up on the non-paper side - COVER all with a piece of wax paper
and iron to attach the H'n'B. That should protect both your iron and your
ironing board!
The wax paper should peel right off. Then cut out the hearts on the fabric
edge, remove the paper backing, and iron on to a square of fabric and sew
down as Janner suggested.
