A good amount of the equipment is TV and radio. Been there for long
before cell phones were even thought of. The CHP, police and emergency
folks probably have a fair amount of 'stuff' up there too.
DH and DS are both ham radio operators. That might be the only
communications happening if the big one hits. DH mentioned that
power going up to the equipment could cause a lot of problems too.
The observatory just had a major overhaul not long ago. I think
things are going much better on the fire front today.

i have been keeping track of the fires as i'll be in California
tomorrow. i won't be near them, i dont think, landing in Long Beach,
so i guess that's more southwest of the fires.
hope it does cool down and rain for them tho.

Well, the weather looks to be cooling down and that is a really good thing.
How much smoke probably depends on how the wind blows but you should
be ok. Not so much smokey here but air quality is so bad I can't see the
mountains
at all today. Cal Fire has done a heck of a job working this and the
other fires
lately.
The weather in So Cal is typically pretty hot and miserable until the first
week
of Oct. My sister and daughter share the 4th as their birthday and mom
always
said that was the worst of the heat and then it broke. I have found that to
be still true.
I hope you have a great trip/visit. Scoot on down to M&L if you can. : )
