I saw sweatshirt jackets when I was on vacation in the US of A, and am
curious as to how they are constructed. Do you cut up a sweatshirt
and line your patchwork jacket with it, or do you buy sweatshirt
fabric ?

Hi Joan, When I didit I bought a cheap (Matalan) sweatshirt, took off the
sleeves, undid the sides and acurately cut down the centre front. I then did
a sort of stitch and flip, some folks apply blocks ,or just decorate all the
parts as you see fit. Then reasemble and bind all the edges andcuffs with
binding of your choice! I did have some sights bookmared but they dont seem
to be there now. I daresay someone on this great gruop will give you links.
Hope this helps. Estelle from damp(still) Cornwall.UK

I developed a very easy, but effective method of doing this. A couple
of examples are on my website. If you wanted to hear how I did mine,
please drop me an e-mail (address here is OK for use) and I'll give you
the run down. (There is a block on point on the back, also).

You need to click on the first 'patchwork and quilting' link in the
paragraph 'Pat is ' .... on the home page; scroll down - they're easy to
spot.

I've done a couple. I bought a sweatshirt at the thrift store, cut up each
side and up the front so it would lay flat. I also cut off the ribbing at
the collar, cuffs, and hems. Make sure you get a sweatshirt slightly on the
large side, as you will be cutting off the cuffs and the quilting draws it
in a tad.

The next step is different, depending on what style you're doing. For the
"patchwork" style, put your patchwork onto the sweatshirt and quilt it to
the sweatshirt. If you are just quilting it, you can put a backing down and
quilt the sweatshirt to that.

Either way, when you're done, sew the side seams back up, and bind all the
loose edges.
