How many of you belong to TQS (the quilt show online with Ricky and
Alex)? Episode 310 =96 Needlework at Its Finest (Liuxin Newman)
is where I learned a very very cool way to secure any kind of thread
on the needle with NO knots and the needle NEVER unthreads. It has to
do with piercing the thread tail with the needle back and forth -
without seeing it, I never would have figured it out. I'm not 100%
sure that season 3 is available online anymore, as season 5 is in full
swing, but I know you can buy the season on dvd and it's worth every
penny. I even bought Liuxin's book on perfect hand applique and have
been honing my skills ever since.

Looking at Liuxin Newman's website, I found she has a video of how to secure
the thread as Cindy described- for free! What a generous lady she is-

I've tried several different time with different styles of needles and I
cannot do this. I don't know why. I've seen people do it and it looks so
easy.

Here's another thing. If that needle doesn't slide just a little bit, the
thread will break at the needle after just a short while. Of course, You
usually have a long enough tail to rethread the needle.

I've been using the John James gold n glide applique needles with a
gold eye and haven't had silk thread break, ever. Of course, my
"ever" accounts for only 2 applique projects ;-D

I've never had silk thread break either, and I've done several projects
with a considerable amount of hand applique. I can't say that about
cotton or dual duty thread.
