OT - Road Trip

Well, maybe some is on topic, because I'm looking for info on quilt shops and whether or not anyone lives close to where we're going. :-)

In May, my DH and I are taking a 2-week road trip with his parents. Now, some of you may go "OMG, what are you thinking?" but I love my inlaws, and they're the only parents I have so I'm really excited. We're flying to NH to meet them, and then driving back across country, sightseeing as we go. In looking at the itinerary DFIL set up, it sounds like great fun. I will get to see things in the USA that I've never seen before, like Niagra Falls, the Ford museum, the Omaha zoo, several various museums, Mt. Rushmore, etc, etc. If Dad's time estimates are correct (and they usually are) we will have a couple free afternoons, so if anyone wants a meetup, we'll be in the Detroit/Greenfield area (the town actually says "Ypsilanti", but I cannot pronounce that-LOL) the afternoon of May 9 and in the Omaha area (actual town: Gretna) on May 12. Please email me privately if you live near either of these places, or know that there is a not-to-be-missed shop in the area!!

I expect to get lots of crocheting and reading done on travel days, as I won't be taking a SM, plus get to spend quality time with Mom/Dad and my DH. Whoo-hoo!! TIA,

What a great trip TerriLee! I think seeing all those things would be wonderful. DH and I might have something similar to do next Fall. Minus the extra parents. He's going to take some "developmental time" off work....kinda like a sabbatical, but not as long. There will be some travel involved at some point. Not sure where yet. Have a great time. Wave as you go through Iowa City/Coralville on I-80!

One thing I would recommend when viewing Niagra Falls is viewing it from the Canadian side. It is much more impressive looking back to the American side, as that is the side it is on. The Henry Ford Museum and Village is worth a whole day, also.

My 2cents worth. John

Thanks, John. :) We do intend to spend a whole day for the Ford Museum and the Village. Dad has this all planned out. His trip notes on Niagra Falls say something about riding a boat, and also going over to the Canadian side, and finding a place to have high tea. Guess I'll have to pack a nice dress, huh?

Don't forget your passport if you're going across the border!

Yes, there are new restrictions about that now. Contact the immigration service to find out "Exactly" what is required or you may become a Canadian citizen by default. You can walk across the bridge to the Canadian side and there are plenty of places to eat and what not on that side. The American side is a ghost town. You could roll a bowling ball down the sidewalks and never hit anybody; that is if you were inclined to roll bowling balls down sidewalks. When you get to the Ford Museum go to the Village first and take one of Model T car tours around the village for an orientation. There are guys in period dress who drive them and they are quite good. Then you can go and see the things that interest you after surveying the options. We had a great time there, even with all the other people who were there in the summer when we were. The museum itself is quite interesting. Lots of original cars and transportation related things. They even have the original bus That Civil Rights pioneer Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on, during the dark days of segregation in the south.

Enjoy,

John

Believe it or not, my passport lives in my handbag. My work often sends me on business trips at a moment's notice, and I use it for ID at the airport, so I keep it handy. (but thanks for the reminder, I'll have to hunt up DH's, which I actually think is in my handbag, also.)

OMG terriLee, My son is in Ypsilanti and I'm up there often. Let me know the dates and I'll do my best to be there. Hopefully without a cast or boot. Two of my favorite quilt shops are there. Gen

It is not a quilt shop, but if you are going to Mr Rushmore, the corn palace in South Dakota is a must see also. A quilt of sorts made from corn.

Yay!!! Hi Gen!! I'll be there the afternoon of May 9th!! Dad's itinerary says 1:50 pm, so email me your number (privately, of course), and I'll call when I get there, OK? Whoo-hoo! One taker!! Others?

I dunno - I'll have to look at Dad's itineray again, but unfortunately, I don't think so. I think most of it is north. However, I get to Philly/NJ on business pretty regularly, how far away is that? (My knowledge of geography is not too good)

Funny you should mention that. DFIL has something about a "Corn Palace" in his trip notes, so I'm guessing it's on the "to-see" list. Thanks!!

Consider adding the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE, to your itinerary. I've never been there, but it sounds interesting. I think Lincoln is only an hour or so from Omaha.

Thanks, Julia. I'll see if we can do that!! Mom would probably like that a lot, and we could leave dad at the motorhome. LOL

TerriLee, Where in Philly/NJ do you go on business? We could maybe meet up next time you're in the neighborhood. Philly's not quite an hour away but depending on schedules.......
