Are your gators that big and that hungry since Butterfly has good
doctors?

Aha! So *that's* what they've been up to. All we've seen lately have
been a pair of roly poly baby black bears tumbling around in the pasture
and a couple of foxy foxes pondering how to climb the pear trees. We can
hear the gators crooning late in the evening; they're practicing to go
Christmas caroling probably. Or something. Polly

is there any point in a small gator?
if you're gonna have'em, they might as well be big to scare off the
furriners.

Oh my dearies, yes there was once a wild and crazy Sunny that you
would never imagine. That Sunny would not have been caught dead
quilting. Or sewing. Or holding a baby and coo-gooing. I was a
newspaper reporter and I was dead set on my career and I went lots of
difficult, dangerous places to talk to people who would never come out
of the swamp or out of the ghetto or off the streets so that I could
get a story. And more than that, because I was (and still am)
fascinated with people. I am in love with the human race. I know that
sounds weird, but it's basically true. I want to hear everyone's
story. I want to know what everybody has to tell me and I want to hear
it from their own mouths. The swamp was actually (memory clicked back
in) called Seven Devil Swamp and was somewhere down around Hamburg,
between south Arkansas and Louisiana. I was with a man who had a story
to tell and a photographer who I later learned was more scared than I
was. The man was supposed to show us something specific in the swamp,
but about an hour in he turned to us and said he just couldn't find
the landmark and couldn't tell how to get out. He lead us in circles
that whole day, trying to make me get hysterical. He kept egging me
and pushing me and calling me Sweetie and Girly and Little Girl and a
lot of other names. I stayed calm. Got interested in the swamp.
Pointed out pictures. And as light was fading I took him by the arm
and showed him a mark I'd dug into a tree with my pocket knife about
two hours earlier. He laughed his head off and said "out" was "that a-
way" and we were back at our car in less than an hour.
And that's a tame story. I took risks that horrify me now. But I'm
glad, because now I'm not young and my body has betrayed me and I'm
not going anywhere anymore. Yes, Polly, once I broke away from the
stifling mess that was my childhood, I was a wild thing. It all worked
out. And now I have treasure beyond belief. I've got memories of
amazing things and places and times.
But then, weren't we all Wild Things one time?
Sunny
