There is an opera about this.
Check out the plot of Paul Hindemith's "Cardillac" (1926).
What happened to Cardillac after he confessed wasn't pretty.

I'm the opposite, I rarely give quilts away, I think because I'm worried
about the standard of my work and that the gifts won't be appreciated.
The first quilt I gave away was to my parents, I wasn't there when they
received it and other than a brief thank you on the phone, it's never
been mentioned since. Another time I worked hard to finish the binding
on a double bed size quilt to get it on the spare room bed in time for
the next lot of guests arriving, which happened to be my parents and
they didn't even want it on the bed!
I think I just need to be more thoughtful who I give quilts too! We hope
to go to the UK at Christmas time, it would be great if I could find the
time to finish some quilts that I didn't plan a purpose for when I began
them and gift those to other family members.
Cheers

Aren't these the risks we all take whenever we make a gift?
It's another in the long list of life lessons they don't teach in
schools. ;-)

Just don't be surprised when history repeats. ;-)
