Interesting reading about winners in the quilting world. I think along
the lines of Louise somewhat.
I just got back from a wedding 500+ miles away. I don't fly but they
only have a puddle jumper airport there anyway so we drove. (actually
more than 6 cars of us drove, even with carpooling) I try not to
ship quilts because when I can get around it so I hand carried this
wedding gift. It was a really beautiful quilt. I have collected several
large picnic baskets over the years so for weddings I give quilts I
pack them in a pretty table cloth in one of these vintage baskets.
When the family saw the picnic basket the other day they all knew
it was a quilt. There were some comments, all good. There were
requests, some could work out to a quilt one day. Nobody even
saw the quilt but they wanted to steal it. ; ) I felt like a winner.
My niece will love the quilt. I quilt because I enjoy it. That they
are so appreciated is such a bonus. I don't do formal award winning
quilts. My work isn't that fine. It is good/ok but not fine. I am ok
with that and so are the folks that love me and my quilts.
I am excited to have finished up that quilt and looking forward to
pulling all the batiks out later today that will be a quilt for ds.
Hopefully I can get dh to liberate the wedding quilt photos to share.

I like this post :-) We think alike. The more I learn about quilting/
shows,
the less I like the idea of "winning" and the more I like the idea of
"intense, sincere appreciation of the recipient."
I won a small local quilt show once. I thought it was a casual, fun
way to
show off what we'd made. Not entirely so. The other ladies who entered
were
older than me, people I really admired and respected. Only one
actually
congratulated me. The others acted cool, and I overheard a really
unkind remark from another. They're too competitive for me. It sucked
all the fun out of winning and really hurt my feelings.
On the level of the Houston show, a friend of mine, an awesome,
professional
quilter, had a woman ask to buy one of her quilts on display. She got
an
offer she couldn't refuse. Then she saw her quilt at the Houston show,
with
the binding replaced. That ain't right.
I heard a story once about someone throwing bleach on a quilt at some
big
show, was that Houston? Can't remember the specifics, but I guess
there
are Tonya Hardings even in the quilting world.

I don't think competition brings out the best in people. I wish we could do
away with ribbons at our show. Still have judging, but no ribbons. I like
to see what the judge says. I just don't care which quilt she "likes" the
best.

Like you my quilts are mainly for gifts and charity. I have won a few
awards but only on the local level as I have no interest in shipping
my quilts to national shows. I make them for the joy of the process.

I feel the same and make quilts for the fun of it (and also because I
can't seem to stop!) But I do like going to shows and seeing fabulous
over-the-top work that will inspire and challenge me. So thank-you to
everyone who goes through the enormous hassle of showing a quilt!
