Hey everyone! I haven't sewn clothing in years (mostly draperies and
straight seams) and have decided (however unwittingly) to make my eldest
daughter's wedding dress from this pattern. She is a size 12 but the
bodice does not come together properly at the bottom of the bodice on her
mock up. We have thought about going up a size (that was just ill fitting
everywhere), dropping out the pleats (but they are what give the bodice
its shape) or creating a reverse V in the bottom of the back out of the
bottom 3 inches or so that don't come together as is - but with the amount
of gathers, I'm concerned that it would have a bustle effect and Of course
I would need to adjust the hem accordingly. Any ideas out there??

How did you decide on that size? Did you select the pattern
size from the "Ready To Wear" size she uses to purchase
clothing? Or from the best match to -her- actual measured
size from the Vogue sizing charts?
http://www.voguepatterns.com/indextec.htm Click "tech
center" then "standard body measurement chart"
You cannot use RTW sizing for pattern-size selection.

Do you have a link to a picture of that pattern? This one:
http://www.voguepatterns.com/item/V2962.htm does not seem to correlate to your description below:

I think you probably need to hire a professional.

First of all, you're trying to make alterations where you should never
make them. It sounds as though it's too big through the midriff and
waist. You make alterations such as this on the sides, not the CF and
CB. And though I don't have a picture of the gown, I think you're
referring to darts rather than pleats. Darts are what give a bodice
its fit. Forgive me, but I think you have bitten off more than you
can chew.

OK, I just went online and found a picture of the dress you want to
make. Those are gathers, not pleats. You need to get the midriff
fitted perfectly, then gather the top to fit it. It should be altered
from the sides, as I said earlier.
