Hello Everyone,
I'll bet many of you will be able to help me. I just purchased a Singer
404 slant needle machine and while it has many of the attachments, it
doesn't have a buttonhole attachment. I've looked in the archives and
have learned a good deal more about what I may need but wanted to be
double sure I knew what to look for. So here it goes: Since it's a slant
needle I'll need the #160743 which commonly come in a dark red case (opens
like a treasure chest) or the oblong pink-cased attachments would work as
well, right? And if there's an attachment that is listed, say for the
301, it'd be compatible with my 404 because both are slant needle
machines. Correct?

Thanks so much for any other advice you may have as well. I'm very
excited to get into this hobby (and have heard good things about the 404)
but am doing my homework as I go along.:) After cleaning the machine,
I'll start by learning how to sew a straight line, then down the road
sometime think about buttonholes, haha.

Thanks,
Epodunk

If you look on the front where the different stitches are listed, you will
probably see a 3 or 4 step buttonhole stitch. You can use the zig-zag foot
when you make the buttonhole. Look in your instruction manual for
directions. HTH

I've got 4 404s right now, I just keep finding them :)

They are a straight stitch machine, so they will need the buttonholer
that moves the fabric. It is the same one used by the Singer 301.
The older style comes in a rectangular "marroon' colored case, the
later style in a oval pink case. Either will work, its the same thing
in different boxes :)

You can see the older style here; part numbers are also listed. In
fact any 301 attachment will work on the 404 since they are both slant
shank straight stitch machines.

These do make a gorgeous straight stitch, and being all-metal gear
driven (no belts) they will stitch through anything you can put under
the foot.

Thanks everyone, for your replies and sorry for the double post.

Irene- Wow, *four* of them! It's nice to know they last and are still
usable unlike a lot of things made today.
I noticed looking at some of the pictures of the maroon cased attachments
that some come with 4 templates, and that others(for a total of 9) can be
bought seperately. If I were looking for the additional templates, would
there be a specific number associated with this type, or did they only
make the one size to fit all buttonholers that used templates?
Thanks again!

Epodunk,

I have never seen another sort of template for this type of button hole
maker attachment. I've used my own attachments quite a lot but have
usually used just a few of the sizes (kids clothes and shirts). I did at
one time sit down and make a sample of all the different sizes on a
strip of fabric so I would have a reference that I could use to check
with different buttons to make it easier to decide what size template to
use.
